I'm still hoping for 5 years for Stepan, but would not be surprised at a 2-3 year bridge contract. Something like this:

3 years, 10 million: $2.75, $3.25, $4 ($3.33 AAV)
5 years, 19 million: $2.75, $3.25, $4, $4, $5 ($3.8 AAV)

Given the Rangers immediate cap concerns, I think a bridge contract is much more likely. They need to have some kind of wiggle room throughout the year.

Sigh... the off season is always good for reminding you why you don't bother with the main boards.

Tyson Barrie. As good as, if not better than, Michael Del Zotto. Of course. We really need to stop trashing our own players... fans of other teams are way to eager to try to use it against us.

i agree. Why are we trashing the players that we want to utilize to improve our team? Can't we emphasize their inherent value when trading about trades as opposed to saying

DEL ZASTER is worse than McD at everything, can't hit the net, PMD, hit his ceiling, defensive liability etc.

I was annoyed by the Barrie comment as well.

It's not like our opinion of the player, or bad mouthing them actually effects their value in RL negotiations, but it certainly is obnoxious when fans of other teams just regurgitate every bad thing that's ever been said about the player, mostly by our own fans, whenever they're arguing value.

Sort of off topic thought it was funny but in Sirius NHL station they have a shout out to HFboards. They were discussing 'whipping boy' threads lol

Fans don't make the trades. So Emphasize it to whom precisely? If we undersell Dz to the yoyos on the main board or the kid playing gm in his/her fantasy league...they might be less likely to bring said proposal to their team's GM? We don't need to kid glove these players. It's just white noise to the pros.

Hey, wouldn't it be ****ing cool if I could turn on NHL Network and not have it be a Penguins game? Or a behind the scenes Pittsburgh show? Or 24/7: James Neal (the only one they seem to show).

What a joke.

The best part about Oil Change is that they still suck. I can't take it seriously for that reason.

That's why I was beyond infuriated when the whole David Wright not picking Pedro Alvarez of the Pirates thing became this angry mob scene in Pittsburgh with the announcers basically passive aggresively telling the fans to boo Wright.

The Steelers (who I don't hate at all) and Penguins basically have their respective leagues kiss their behinds, so goodness forbid Pittsburgh doesn't get what they want. That city more than any other play's up being blue collar to the point of mockery and brats.

I would never hate a city, I just don't like how there's this perception of Pittsburgh being "the right kind of city" and "oh we're so much better than you because we're so blue collar."

That Dustin Brown deal is clearly a benchmark for a Cally deal.

I would think so, but believe Cally (which is justified) will get slightly lower years and annual salary.

Just like Matt Duschenes second contract should be a precursor (also he should get more) to the coming Derek Stepan deal regarding years 4 & 5 in the NHL.

Duschene got the following Bridge deal and then bought his final 2 RFA years and 3 years of UFA:

2012-2013 $3,275,000
2013-2014 $3,750,000

2014-2015 $6,000,000
2015-2016 $6,000,000

2016-2017 $6,000,000
2017-2018 $6,000,000
2018-2019 $6,000,000

Buying 3 UFA years cost them (The Avalanche) at least 10% on the 2 last RFA years - meaning his caphit on a 4 year deal should be $5,500,000 per annum for RFA years 6 + 7. Total caphit for Duschene for a 4 year deal (going to UFA) would then be $18 M for 4 years or 4,5 M per for 4 years.

If one considers production after their first 3 professional years, age when entering the league (Duchene 2 years younger), other intangibles and draft position (which matter regardless of what people here say!) then Matt Duchene should have at least a 10% higher market value than Derek Stepan. More likely closer to 15%

Here are the main stats to look at:
Quote:
Matt Duchene
Chosen 3rd overall (1st round in 2009)
NHL debut at 18 years of age
NHL stats 1st 3 RFA years
219 GP - 65 goals - 85 assists - 150 points - 0,68 PPG
Quote:
Derek Stepan
Chosen 51 st overall (2nd round in 2008)
NHL debut at 20 years of age
NHL stats 1st 3 RFA years
212 GP - 56 goals - 56 assists - 112 points - 0,53 PPG
Stepan should then be looking at the following average salary - depending on length - as a final amount to put his ink on Don Glens paper:

2 year bridge deal ~ $3,2M - 3,3M per
3 year bridge deal ~ 4 M per year
4 year deal ~ 4,5 M per year
5 year deal ~ 4,7 M per year

If one realizes how these contracts are constructed then it is much easier to see where this will wind up

Agreed. Cally is a minor step down from Brown, IMO.

I think he left for a Cup. Detroit is no doubt a better team with him, and they have a chance to go further now that they're in the East. I mean, he fits like a glove in Detroit.

i think he sees them as a better contender than Ottawa at this point. if not that, he's with a few of his friends from the National Team, so...

He gets anywhere near that Stepans numbers go up. A lot.
The other thing is that Gagner gets traded.
