It's not that bad. In Hodgson the first syllable rhymes with the second of "garage" unless I'm mistaken. Hodger would, I expect, be pronounced like "lodger" rather than Mikael Boedker.

Maybe someone needs to start a thread entirely dedicated on how to pronounce Hodgson.

There's no "way that nicknames work." Jogen makes as much sense as Johnny, or J-dawg or Fernando. If you think it sounds dumb, say it sounds dumb, but it's not like there's some neutral rules you can arbitrate over here.

Update on Blake Geoffrion: The Blue Jackets have signed him as a scout. Nice to see the guy find a way right back into the game, whether he returns to the ice some day or not this offers a path to a long-term career within the sport.

A new study says a recent NHL rule change designed to cut down on the number of concussions in the league hasn't made a difference. The research suggests the rule, which outlawed bodychecks aimed at the head and checking from a player's blind side, has not led to lower concussion rates.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=427916

This doesn't necessarily mean the rule changes were a bad idea -- intentional headshots need to have massive consequences and accidental head contact is deserving of a penalty, with a worse penalty if it was reckless -- but the truth is the only way concussions will see a large reduction is through the evolution of equipment. Right now, the evolution of equipment has caused more concussions: new sticks cause faster pucks, shoulder and elbow pads are like bricks, etc.

I'm not interested in arguing the practicality or desirability of forcing players to wear full facial protection, but it's really the only way to significantly reduce concussions. Blows to the chin and mouth are what most commonly cause concussions in hockey or anything else. If they can find a way to make pads effective at protection without being hard, that would also have a major impact in a reduction of concussions. The NFL has a similar problem where the helmets themselves are causing head trauma as there's no way around the fact that helmets will bump together constantly throughout the game.

It's a little early to be drawing conclusions there. Besides, the major effect will be visible if at all with the next generation of NHLers that have grown up more cognizant of the danger of concussions.

That's true, though the next generation is also going to be stronger and faster. To what extent continuing rule changes are going to impact concussions we don't know, but I'm fairly confident in saying the results would pale in comparison to those brought on by advancements in equipment.

Simple rule changes like this are a half measure at best. What's needed is a comprehensive culture change at all levels of the game. The way that the culture approaches hitting, and how players in vulnerable positions are at fault for getting hit because taking advantage of that situation is a moral imperative, needs to change for the concussion problem to be addressed. Things like rule changes and equipment changes should also be pursued, of course, as harm reduction measures, but by themselves I doubt they'll be able to fix the problems because they don't get at the root causes.

I remember reading it's a year from when his last contract was signed, so sometime in late February of next year.

Anyone else think Minnesota will be a force next season? Ballard and Cooke are nice additions to an already solid team.

Something about them worries me. They should've been really good last season and ended up being a borderline playoff team that got completely outclassed in the playoffs. I don't really think Ballard is a factor at all, and Cooke isn't the type of guy who is good enough to really make a large dent in a team's performance.

The short season did them no favors, with the new faces needing some time to adjust. They should be in the heart of the race next season IMO

Psst, until Granlund develops, their center depth is real bad. As is the defense past Suter/Brodin, with Dumba replacing the young pivot.

Also, they could just pull a Chicago and make use of crazy wing depth with P/Coyle/Zucker/Poms/Nieds.

But in all circumstances, they have to develop the kids.
