Paul Martin

Right now after last season, Paul Martin had a great season. What would other teams have to offer in order to get him. He has a very good shot, good 2 way defenseman, and can log 25 minutes of ice time every game.

They would have to overpay. Martin is an important part of the Pens' defense.

Something around smid + I think he would be a great partner for Letang and saves you money

Scuderi will most likely be Letang's partner. also, that + would have to be significant for the Pens to move Martin at this point.

While I agree whole heartedly Martin isn't going anywhere, I'd love him on the Avs.

This, and in the extremely unlikely occurrence that Martin gets moved, it certainly wouldn't be in return for another defenseman.

I disagree; if we were to deal Martin, our defence looks like this:

Scuderi-Letang
Despres-Orpik
Bortuzzo-Engelland

That doesn't look too good to me. Unless Despres or one of our defence prospects completely lights the world on fire, we'd definitely need a Smid as part of the return. Of course, maybe if we were dealing Martin, it would imply that one of our prospects is capable of taking on those tough minutes...

That said, I'm just humoring this idea. I don't see any situation where trading Martin this season makes sense. At most, we'd be getting a slight downgrade on defence with a slight upgrade at forward or a major upgrade at forward with a major downgrade on defence. Neither looks appealing to me.

Martin was our best defenseman before he got hurt. Wasn't 100% in the playoffs, but still our only D-man who played with any kind of consistency.

Exactly, his value is through the roof after this past season. Also, we have guys like despres, Harrington, Maatta, pouliot, Samuelson, and dumoulin that can play in the NHL this year, next year, or the next year. Dumoulin, Harrington, despres are all NHL ready IMO.

There's a difference between NHL ready and ready to take on Martin's 25 minutes a night. We have other defencemen we can drop if the prospects force our hand. I'd just rather not throw them to the wolves.

Good god no. No need to trade our best defenseman.

Martin is more valuable to us than he would be to anyone else.

Paul Martin has a good shot? Things have changed since his NJ days if that's the case.

I've always liked Paul, but just a season ago many Pens fans wanted him gone. Now, 60 games later, he's better than Letang.

You are right he does not have a great shot at all, not sure where that came from.

Well there was a big difference in his play in 2011-12, than it was this past season.

Unless they are completely blown with an offer i doubt hes traded.

I think the + in that deal would have to make a whole lot more sense for the Pens right now than Smid does.
Martin is anchoring the Pens shutdown pairing, I would not really want to imagine Orpik without him. To trade him for a partner for Letang does not nearly increase that pairing anywhere near as much as it weakens the other one.

His shot's still terrible.

I wouldn't say that, but there's a case to be made. The turnaround in his game was remarkable - he even admitted how awful he had been playing. I wanted to hurl him off a bridge after the 2012 playoffs, but he was indispensable in 2013.

Not to mention, we already addressed the issue of Letang's partner.

His shots not great, but this year he's slapshot seemed to pick up velocity. There was a few goals this year that were absolute snipes and i was like paul martin???? really?

He got a little stronger, so now you can't read Gary Bettman's signature when he shoots from the point...but it's still below average on the whole.

No way the Pens are moving Martin right now. It just doesn't make sense. He was our best player in the playoffs all told.

Yes, Mark Eaton is a great top pairing defenseman.
