In Association football, particularly, fans seem to be certain that the superior side on paper will always triumph.

Don't buy into names. An otherwise average team in great form can (and often does) beat a great team in average form. The US team is better than most people would think, but at the same time isn't as good as many would like to think. But, when playing well, the US team can hang with almost anyone.

A lot changes in a year though. It's a common saying that you sometimes need one team to qualify for, and another team to compete in the World Cup. I think that applies to America in this case.

Bradley and Dempsey are miles better than they were 3 years ago, but there's no doubt Donovan has dipped.

For the U.S., the big problem continues to be a lack of pace, and no good center forward options after Altidore. I see Wondo more as a Twellman, I don't expect him to be able to score against the big name countries.

I see the following far better than the US

Spain
Brazil
Germany
Italy
Holland
Argentina
France

And still clearly, but not far better:

Belgium
Croatia
Japan
Ivory Coast
Portugal
Russia
Bosnia
England
Columbia
Ecuador
Chile

That's 7 teams where it would be a miracle for the US to win. And 11 where the others would have to play badly to lose

Lol I have only been to one Redbulls game and that was the first season they started playing to see what it was like. It was pretty boring for me. Who woulda known the fanbase would blossom into a beautiful bunch of hooligans.

Considering all the brawls I have seen happen when in Europe with my cousins I think the MLS really should calm down with this. Like someone else said atleast we don't behead our refs.

It's because soccer is something that's "worth checking out" in this country. It's not engrained in the upbringing of American's like Gridiron Football in the south, or like Baseball once was. If you want that kind of rabid passion in the states you need to build clubs from the community level upwards. It'll also help to have religious and political conflicts manifest themselves into club matches as well. Give supporters a reason other than footy to hate each other. Rangers v Celtic for example.

Can anyone explain why the Costa Rican goalie only got a yellow for a two handed save outside the 18? Every level I've played at that is an automatic red card. The fact that he only got a yellow is bush league refereeing.

Everyone and their mother was questioning that call. Should've been a red card.

It can be a yellow if the referee feels that the players was passing the ball to another teammate instead of shooting it on goal. Didn't see that.

Automatic punishments aren't popular in soccer as they are in American sports. I didn't feel it was worthy of a sending off.

I was at the usa game in Hartford last night.... Lots of costa Rica fans were there, but it was definitely a pro usa crowd. Didn't see any hostility between the usa supporters or the ticos...

The keeper would have stopped it with his body if not his hands. It was just a reflex.

Incidentally, RBNY drew with Lyon yesterday 2-2, despite playing without Henry all game and most of their starters half the game.

Pretty dominating performance for the USMNT today. Some thoughts I had:

Beasley's age is catching up to him and it was pretty noticeable today. Makes you wonder who will be playing defense come WC time.

Donovan is good.

I really like the way Wondolowski plays. Keeps his game simple and is just a pure finisher. That's a great quality for soccer players, a guy who has a nose for the net. He should be on the WC team.

Donovan played well, but he had two chances on his feet to put the game away in the 1st half when it was 2-0. Instead, El Salvador was let back into the game with the penalty kick. The lack of killer instinct on the USA squad has been a problem for a while now. You need to finish those chances when you're playing teams like Spain, Germany, and Brazil when the games matter.
