The real ranking according to every fan ever:

1) My team
2-28) Most other teams
29-30) My team's main rivals

But it was an interesting read. Certainly disagree with him on more than a few, especially with having New Jersey so low, but can't really fault his logic for the top slots or dead last.

Not to nitpick as I think that's a pretty good list, but how many top free agents have signed in Montreal. I'd say that Ottawa has gotten more over the years.

I feel like Montreal is way too high. We always get the 2nd tier free agents so I don't think it warrants a top 10 spot.

I suppose it could be worse. He could have had us in the "defect to KHL before signing here" tier, instead of being the lowest-ranked team just outside of same.

Baby steps.

I guess that defeats the purpose of Bourne saying where he'd want to be, but it's perhaps a bit more accurate look at what players actually think.
Yea this is a better list because it's actually players giving their input instead of a blogger speculating.

The premise of the article is just dumb. Some people love big cities, and some hate them. Some people like cold weather, and some hate it. Some people want to be big fish in a small pond, and some want anonymity. Players at the lower end of the pay scale might prefer to live somewhere where the cost of living (esp. housing) is lower. Some players want to be near their families, and some don't care. Some players prefer a gung-ho hockey fanbase, and some prefer less pressure. etc, etc, etc.

I can guarantee you my list would look nothing like Bourne's.

Colorado is exactly where I'd put them on this list. I'd drop Edmonton and Phoenix a few spots, but raise Winnipeg a few as well.

Surprised that Ottawa is so low on the list. Being a fan I'm a bit bias , but Ottawa is a beautiful city, where and although its a Canadien market you aren't scrutinized too much. It has everything you need to live the big city life while having a smaller quiter feel.

Montreal has gotten more over the last years for sure.

That's not to say Ottawa isn't a good destination but they don't usually build through the UFA market.

Notable FAs for Montreal:
Cammalleri
Gionta
Prust
Moen
Spacek
Hamrlik
Cole

Ottawa:
Gonchar
Konopka
Auld
Latendresse
???

What position do I play? What type of player am I? Will teams have cap and roster room for me? This is pure opinion without any research.

There's an argument for younger players wanting to go there, because their core is so young. That said, the city itself is near the bottom in terms of desirability; you take Calgary, make the weather worse, add more crime, and make it more remote/further from the mountains, and you get Edmonton. Nearly every city in the NHL has something on that (be it cultural capital or climatic/geographical capital).

Not a bad list. He did name most of the important factors.

He brought it up a few times, but I think a big factor that needs to be understood a bit better around here is taxes. Someone signing a 5M contract in Florida vs. Montreal could mean sometimes like 1M in lost salary.

I was scrolling down with the intent of posting exactly this. Montreal is in the worst tax-level region in North America. And I do my own taxes.

What a subjective ridiculous list,

1-my team
2-29- everyone else
30 - main rival

Rinse repeat, and include veiled insults to said rivals

I don't think he watched Toronto hockey this year.

They've been bad, but he failed to mention at least efforts to be
more respectable.

Refreshingly, the posts here have largely been pretty objective, IMHO.

Oh, and Pittsburgh should be 30th.

It didn't look like that to me at all, but I'm guessing your team is near the bottom.

Do you have anything to back up your opinion or are you just repeating the same thing we see in every single thread that is based on opinion?

"LOL MY TEAM FIRST, ENEMY TEAM LAST"

It's one of those overused arguments that just doesn't hold up anymore.

Already made that joke here.

Also, that hasn't really been happening in this topic.

Disclaimer: Pens fan.

The only thing that Pittsburgh doesn't have is that it's not as big as New York, LA, Boston, and Chicago.

The top tier should really be the last four standing from the playoffs this year, and New York just because it's New York and Sather loves his big money free agent signings.

I would certainly not put the Pens at fifth. Awesome owner and GM, brand new building, hockey crazed city that still offers anonymity, tons of national exposure, great team chemistry.

Their problems are the current coach and their goalie.

The real deciding factors are team needs in free agency and cap space to get that dolla dolla bill, y'all. This other stuff is just gravy.
