me too. A purely offensive player. Defense can be taught.

Next year will provide a better gauge for Ausmus and just how adept he actually is at shutting down forwards.

Doug Wilson had never previously selected a Russian in his 10 years with the Sharks—though Daniil Sobchenko, a Ukranian did play for Yaroslavl, the same team that Galmov would play for—so it shows that the Sharks are familiar and comfortable drafting from this area.
Nah it doesn't

Why do you think the lottery sells tickets in the first place?

Point being, statistically speaking, Kennedy playing 1 single solitary NHL game for the Sharks has a LOT more value than a 2nd round pick which statistically has a very low converstion percentage. We have him for two years, potentially 164 games, that is absolutely worth a 'lottery ticket' in my book. most teams would have paid a 2nd to get him at the deadline as a rental (even if he was a UFA). We got him for a 2nd, which we could spare, for two seasons, and he's a very good fit. We now have one of the best 3rd lines in the NHL at the expense of one 2nd and one 3rd round pick.

Everyone complains about depth, but then when we finally have it they complain about some nearly worthless picks. If you want to complain about trading up for Mueller, have at it, but complaining about Kennedy is silly.

I really don't have a huge problem with the Mueller pick either to be honest. I think it's pretty clear Jarmo was about to pick him, and if Jarmo thinks he's worth it then I'm going to trust one of the most successful european's scouts of all time.
Excellent post!

Just wondering why I didn't get any kudo's when I made the exact same points shortly after the draft.

I feel slighted

I did not know that. I thought I had read he wasn't that great. Guess I was wrong. Did he when he was drafted? Cause we're kinda talking about that right?

Nieto's defensive game was ok when he was drafted, he certainly wasn't considered a liability, he's improved that part of his game quite a bit though.

Well comfortable drafting from Yaroslavl maybe. Lokomotiv's coach is Tom Rowe, who is the father of one of our scouts, Jason Rowe.

Nieto on his game.
“I’m a reliable two-way forward. I’m mostly known for my offensive ability. I think my defensive game is something that’s overlooked a little bit. I think my best asset is my speed,” Nieto said.

I'm not. He said it better and with more words. I said blah... blah... blah... get over it or something like that.

Good point, and I think a big reason for that improvement was Jack Parker (coach of the Terriers). It just goes to show what good coaching can do for a kid.

As Gene mentioned here before, you can teach defense, but you can't teach scoring.

That's good information. Most people thought the Sharks really went off the board for this pick, maybe they have had "closed door" information that he'll come here.
