Will Markov and Gionta both be gone after next season?

Gionta just floats around. He has a wicked shot, but the injury bug hit him hard and he is now a non-factor out there. As a captain, you're supposed to lead by example on and off the ice. I can't speak to off the ice, but on the ice, he lacks that intensity and leadership that I want to see in our captain. Get rid of him! Goodbye!

Markov still sees the ice well, but can no longer skate. It seems like his knee gives in and he falls a lot. Can't keep the puck in on the power play. Often gets caught pinching, leading to odd man rushes. Get rid of him too!! Goodbye!

^^ = BIG TIME CAP SPACE

I think these two has-beens leaving would get this team going in the right direction.

Just my two cents.

Probably. I hope so as long as we get good assets back.

Don't think Markov will leave, but Gionta definitely should.

I can see Markov sticking around. He wouldn't be making 5.whatever million anymore, but he'd still likely be an asset.

Gionta definitely will. I don't have much in faith Markov will be back either. He slowed considerably towards the end of the season. He's still the 2nd best dman on the team though.

Time to get tougher, better and younger.

I hope both are dealt at the trade deadline for draft picks or something. Unless Gio can come back from another really bad injury I think he's pretty much done. Markov showed us last season he's really lost a few steps.

Hard to get better when you get rid of your 2nd best defenseman. Gionta should definitely not be re-signed (even though I like the guy) but Markov should be kept around for another year or two until Beaulieu shows he can play in the NHL.

He was top 5 in the LEAGUE in points by a defenseman, even though he lost a few steps he's still a very good D. He just played way too many minutes, limit his even strength time this year and he's fine. He's no longer a top pairing defenseman but he's definitely still a very good top 4 guy.

I think the best would be Markov staying with a bone-fide no2 D-Men (no, Josh Gorges doesn't cut it) joining the club in between. Oh, with a salary south of 5M, obviously.

Markov still has something to give and wouldn't be that costly. The time for Gionta to leave though will have arrived next spring.

Markov stays.
Gionta is gone: Briere, Gallagher, Desharnais, Thomas, Reway, Dumont.

I can see Markov staying in a diminished role, similar to what Kaberle had before the last 2 seasons. Gionta on the other hand is pretty much guaranteed to be gone, unless the habs acquire his brother for some reason and even then I think he should retire as a Devils.

Of all the things to criticize Markov on, the powerplay? Really?

He's still one of, if not the best powerplay QB in the league.

I think he sticks around, but at a reduced salary and a reduced role. He can't be playing 25 minutes a night and playing top minutes on the PK.

I really like GIO but I just don't think there's room for him on the habs anymore past next season unless he has a remarkable 30 goal season or something and forces the habs hand. I think he's a great leader but just don't see it happening.

As for Markov, I don't understand all the markov hate. He still is one of the best PP Qbs in the league, and it's no coincidence that the last time the habs had a great season was a healthy markov and low and behold markov is healthy again this season and we finish second. He's a vital part of the team and needs to remain and retire as a hab.

OP said that "Gionta lacks that intensity and leadership that I want to see in our captain".

Am I dreaming? Did he say that? Some people on this website already know that I hate Gionta, but I would NEVER say this about him.

Markov will retire a Hab

He will sign another deal for less and stay.

There is no reason to get rid of a top pp D man(that means top in the league).
u get rid of gorges first for sure if u need to drop a veteran defenceman or bouillon

Maybe but the guy is damaged goods and he's not getting any younger. He can only go on decline from now on imho.

Should be a PP specialist with limited ice time and that's it

I expect Gionta to not be re-signed or dealt if the Habs are out of a playoff spot at the deadline.. Markov might be back depending on how he plays next year. I'd say it's wait and see regarding Markov for Habs management. If he plays well I could see him re-signed for another year or 2.

You would think this would be Gionta last year, but with MB, he might just give him a contract extension mid season, could never have to many smurfs.

With that said, if we didn't have so didnt have so many smurfs I wouldn't be opposed to re-signing Gionta to a short term deal. Him and Gallagher are small but all win battles along the boards and go to the net and have success, unlikely other small players we have in Briere and DD.

I go rewatched all 14 of Gionta's goals, 11 of them came from him being around the crease, over a full season that's about 19-20 goals from just being infront of the net

As for Markov, I don't think he will be traded, unless we are clearly out of the playoff race at the trade deadline, but I think if Bealieau has a great year next year in the AHL and possible if he gets any time in the NHL to show that he will be able to play on a 3rd pair and get first unit pp time, they will just let Markov walk as a UFA.

If Beaulieu doesn't show any signs of being able to do that or gets traded, I think Markov will get re-signed.

Thing about Markov is while he should be playing tough minutes 5 on 5, he is too good on the pp, and we don't have anyone to replace him as the QB other than maybe Bealieau, because Subban isn't a qb pp, he is a trigger man.

Gionta just floats around, really? He's overpaid, no longer very physical and might not have a usable shoulder anymore, but the last thing the man is is a floater. He's one of the best two-way forwards on the team and still can will his way in to some garbage goals.

And the disrespect Markov gets around here is something. Markov had some serious defensive flaws last year but Therrien was overplaying him and using him in a stupid-difficult role. If Markov was used as the 2nd pairing even strength guy he now is all season (a lot like that Edler guy so many people here want), he could have been even better. As it was he was one of the most effective PP weapons in the league and did probably as much good as bad in a defensive role he wasn't suited for. The late season Subban-Markov pairing was a possession monster, and while Subban was the driver of that, Markov was a more dominating partner than Gorges.

This board obsesses over cap space, but what good is cap space if all it gets us is the likes of Briere?

Unless Markov wants something ridiculous (5-6M+) I will be really pissed if we don't resign him.

Gionta I "hope" we can get a 1st for him at the deadline (if Murray can get two seconds anything is possible lol).

Depends mostly on what they're asking for, but I sincerely doubt we won't have players on the roster who those two won't be more useful than.
