Brenden Morrow talking to Carolina

per Luke DeCock
Quote:
Brenden Morrow's agent confirmed he has spoken with the Hurricanes and expects to do so again. 34-yo LW was a Muller teammate in Dallas.
He'd be a pretty perfect fit on the Hurricanes 3rd line, I think. But if Jim Rutherford isn't willing to sign Ron Hainsey without moving salary, he'd likely have to do the same for Morrow.

I've seen fans toss out Tuomo Ruutu as a possible player to be moved for salary reasons. Morrow could certainly replace his physicality, and then have ample room to sign Hainsey.

$5 Mil in real money and a NMC? Be hard to find any takers with the cap reduction... Toronto? Wouldn't make any sense to trade him if the 'Canes retain part of his salary.

I don't know what kind of money he wants, but I don't think he has much gas left and if you want him on your 3rd line you are going to be disappointed.

Darcy Regier recently said that a lot of potential deals out there are getting held up because every team wants the other team to take on a heavy real money contract. Wouldn't be surprised if Ruutu is one of those players. Would probably be why GMJR was rumored to be trying to shuffle around contracts to sign Jagr.

He's a 4th liner now, as such he should come very cheap.

Don't expect much. He WAS a pretty good player a few years ago. His playing style took a toll on his body. I hope he does good with whichever team he signs with (please not in Dallas).

Carolina has holes in their top 9, and 7 dmen they like.

They aren't moving out a forward to bring in a dman. They'd move out a dman (pitkanen) to bring in Hainsey, and use the savings on a forward.

OR

They'll just sign a forward. Ruutu isn't going anywhere. They need more guys like Ruutu, not less.

Morrow is good when he's not injured. The problem is he's increasingly injury-prone. Even a one year deal seems like a bit of a gamble for Carolina unless he'll come very cheap.

Is Morrow old enough to do a bonus-heavy deal? If so that would make a lot of sense, otherwise he better be coming cheap if he is.

I'm not quite sure why some are trying to take credit away from Morrow. He was pretty darn good in Pittsburgh in both the regular season and playoffs and while you can give some credit to the teammates around him you can't not give him any credit at all. He held his own very nicely. He's worth a one-year contract somewhere. I'd say $2M is reasonable for him.

As for Carolina, he'd fill a bottom-six need for them. In regards to Hainsey, I really don't see why the Canes need him. Gleason, Pitkanen, Harrison, Sekera, Komisarek, and Faulk already on the roster with Murphy in the mix for a spot. No room.

Morrow could be a nice fit with J. Staal and Ruutu on a north-south, physical, grinding 2nd line that is able to control the puck down low and on the cycle. If Carolina has the greenlight to spend to the ceiling and Morrow is willing to take a 1 year deal in the $2.5 mil range, it works cap-wise.

Would love him. Perfect fit for our bottom 6, or maybe try him with Ruutu and Jordan Staal on the 2nd line.

Jim Rutherford said he continues to look to shed cap space so it looks like Tuomu Ruutu is likely on the outs.

How does this look?

Toronto
Ruutu
2nd

Carolina
Kulemin

Kulemin is younger and a better pure shooter than Ruutu. Ruutu is grittier and more physical, even though he is smaller. Point totals are kind of a wash, so in a way, this trade is us giving away a second for just under 2m in cap savings.

The value is fair, plus it's another Russian to keep Semin company. I'd love if we could find a way to sign Morrow and also keep Ruutu though.

Morrow would be a good pickup for that team, he'd add a lot to their bottom 6.

Carolina should just sign him as an assistant coach or maybe part time player/coach.

If Carolina wants to sign this guy, they may as well invest in some small, unnoticeable turbo skate so he's not the slowest guy in the league.

Just curious of your placement. Has Skinner really been that bad that he's not worth playing on the first or second line? Or is it just a chemistry thing?

Yeah, I was thinking Morrow's gotten pretty slow these days and he would be physical but I'm not sure he's entirely meant to be a 3rd liner. Another reason why he probably didn't work out in Pittsburgh.

He could be ideal third liner for Philly. We have a spot there open. Just do your magic Holmgren and bring the mentor for our PF younsters.
