I wouldn't mind Phaneuf on the Habs. He can crunch minutes like the best of them, but he probably not an elite d-man like Leafs fans pretend he is.

If he's on the block I wonder what the price would be? What could we offer?

Yeah if Phaneuf was insulated he'd look a heck of a lot better. He's not a #1 defenseman, but he's getting paid like one...and the Leafs keep playing him like one.

He gets bashed so much that I almost feel like he's a little bit underrated, actually.

The posters at Pension Plan Puppets love Phaneuf (argh, too many "p's"). They may even believe he's as good as Subban.

To be fair to him, last season he was playing with a rookie partner, which couldn't be easy seeing as his partner had no business playing on the top defensive pairing.

We complain about Diaz or even Gorges in the Top 4, but imagine having Kostka or Holzer as your #2 guy. *shudders*

On another note, it's strange that the Leafs PK was so widely celebrated last season. I guess it's just that unusual for them to have a good one... But reading about their PK, you'd think it was the most powerful tool ever known to hockey. The Habs had the 2nd best PK in the league while also placing last in the Eastern Conference in 2011-2012. What happened to that?

Grabovsky is still available and can likely be had for around $2.5 MM.

That being said, I wonder who'd prefer to have him over DD, even at the same $3.5MM that DD makes?

All things being equal, I'd much rather have Grabs, especially that you know he'll smoke the Laffs whenever they play like he did against the Habs. That and I think he's a better overall player than DD, but that just my opinion.

He is definitely better. He's put up 29 goals in a season, probably can put up higher offensive numbers than he did when buried in a defensive role (he has had a season of 58pts before), is a better skater, more gritty, etc.

If DD were buried in a defensive role like Grabovski, he wouldn't come out alive (both statswise and literally).

I've said it before: 30 is getting old in the NHL. This is a stupid deal. Should have given him 5 years at 6.5. I think you'll see less and less deals carrying players beyond 35 soon.

It's official, NHL players will be in Sochi for the Olympics.

So, PK and Price for Team Canada?

I'd like to say it's a given, but the competition will be tough. Hopefully Waite will work wonders with Price so he can solidify the starters job for Sochi.

Our last representative on Team Canada at the olympics was Shayne Corson.

I'm starving for a Hab to make the team. Hope both will be there.

From Habs, I see PK, Patches, Price, Pleks, Diaz, and maybe Markov making their Olympic teams.

Subban has a good chance.

Galchenyuk has an outside shot as well, depending on how he does this season, sometimes teams like to bring along younger talent to give them experience.

Eller if Denmark is in the olympics for hockey.
Andrighetto might make the Swiss team?

Price on Team Canada?

A great way to lose, frankly.

I don't know if you've seen the list of Canada's potential #1 starters, but it's not exactly filled with impenetrable walls. The Brodeur and Roy days are over and no one's really picking up the torch.

As of today, I would say Crawford and Luongo would be on the team...and for the 3rd spot...well Price, Ward, Reimer, Fleury etc will all have to battle it out. It might just be who's playing well leading up to the games.

I'm not ready to anoint Crawford a definite starter.. Luongo will be the 3rd goalie only because he's been there before. I doubt Reimer or Fleury have a sniff at the team, they are both genuinely terrible.

It will be Luongo, Ward, Price and Crawford in the mix for the 3 spots.

3rd goalie? Luongo could easily be the starter.

I know a lot of people aren't sold on Crawford...but he's proven a heck of a lot more recently than his competition. That has to count for something.

I'm not sold on Crawford...but it's not like Price, Ward, Fleury and Luongo have done much to earn the job.

I would say just based on pedigree, you would have Price, Luongo and Fleury.

I would say that out of the 3, the ones who fell out of glory the most would be Fleury who lost his starting job for the entire play offs, Luongo with the fiasco and than Price who was having a great Vezina worthy season until the last month when he came undone.

The strongest goalies will get the longest looks going into the season. Whichever play best will likely get names to the team and they'll probably rotate them and go with the hot hand to start to Olympics and would likely be on a short leash.
