while Gagne would be a welcome addition to the 3rd line, I'm not sure he would see time on the PK as some suggest. I would like to see him, play with Coots and Read.

Our PK regardless if Gagne is back or not should look something like.

Coots/Talbot
Hall/Read

I like. Especially Giroux I don't want to see on the PK.

As good as he is, we have enough other guys on the roster. Let him create havoc on the PP and ES.

We should sign Jagr and Gagne, and trade Read + Coburn/Mez + Draft picks for a good young defenseman. Then have a Gagne/Vinny/Jagr line, just because I think that would be awesome.

Great playmaker, immovable puck handler + purest shooter Peter Forsberg has ever played with = best line in hockey.

meh...I'd like somebody to be less than 33 years old on that line.

Giroux will be on the PK. You people may not want it, but there's no way he isn't

I think Talbot and Coots finally picked up their games last season when they were paired with Gagne.

Gagne is more then just fast. He understands the game and where to be on the ice. He is a steadying presence. If they can sign him for less then $2M for 1-2 years that would be good signing. Let the young guys force their way into the lineup.

I would like to see a 3rd line look like:

Gagne - Coots - Simmonds

I know Simmonds isn't an ideal defensive winger but this would guys in their natural positions and have a mix of size and skill on each line. Plus, Coots get a chance to play with legit wingers.

Hartnell - Giroux - Vinny
Read - Schenn- Voracek
Gagne - Coots - Simmonds
Talbot -Hall-Rinaldo

if Gagne isn't signed

Hartnell -Giroux-Voracek
Schenn- Vinny -Simmonds
Read- Coots - McGinn
Talbot - Hall- Rinaldo

That last line up would be really tough to play against with Hartnell, Simmonds, Schenn, McGinn, Talbot and Rinaldo flying around but I like the flexibility that a healthy Gagne brings.

On the Flyers roster on their website, Knuble, Foster, Huskins, etc (UFA's) were taking off of the roster. Gagne is still on it. Clearly the website manager is under the assumption that he's coming back.

Correct me if i'm wrong but could this deal be done and need to wait for the season to start? Could we in theory sign Gagne in season just after we LTIR Pronger? Obviously he wouldn't get camp and all but Gagne knows how to prepare.

Just spit balling here.

Its possible, but if it were caught, it would be viewed as cap circumvention. Handshake deals simply aren't allowed. I'm sure they happen, but your example would be fairly blatant. I also don't think the Flyers would be too keen on running themselves right back up to the cap before the season even started.

More likely, Holmgren could have talked about some of the parameters of a Gagne deal, but will look to move some money first. He got burned pretty badly when he was forced to trade Gagne himself the first time and eat a returning bad contract. I'm sure he's looking to avoid that situation.

If I understand LTIR correctly, I think I may see what Homer is planning to do with Gagne.

We currently have -$2,053,522 in cap space. Dumping Meszaros will give us $1,946,478. Give Gagne a $1.9mil contract, and have $46,478 until Pronger goes on LTIR. Then we will maximize our possible cap relief and have $4,894,951 to spend.

Holmgren pulling a slick move on the cap to enable us maximum space would be the cherry on top of this off season for him.

your numbers are off since capgeek has us with 25 players on our roster. If you remove Laughton and Bourdon we end up with -$334k in cap space. Trading Mez gives us $3.665m in cap space. Signing Gagne to ~$2.5m then gives us $1.165m in cpa space.

So technically we still have cap space for injury call-ups. We don't even need to put Pronger on LTIR, so we can just bank our cap space for the trade deadline

I think they can also gain a little extra room by sending some players to the AHL for the first game.

And he can add even more space by putting Brayden in a Phantoms uniform for the first game of the season.

I don't know if that is true this year. I Tweeted at CapGeek and asked them if the Flyers could do that and they said it was already factored in to their calculations (which have him at the $3 million or so cap hit). Hopefully they are wrong, but they are usually pretty good with stuff like that.

Hartnell (4.75) - Giroux (3.75) - Voracek (4.25)
Schenn (0.90) - Lecavalier (4.50) - Simmonds (3.98)
xxxxxxxxxx - Couturier (0.93) - Read (0.90)
Rinaldo (0.75) - Hall (0.60) - Talbot (1.75)
Rosehill (0.68)

Timonen (6.00) - Schenn (3.60)
Streit (5.25) - Coburn (4.50)
Gustafsson (1.00) - Grossmann (3.50)
Meszaros (4.00) - Gervais (0.83)
*Pronger (4.92)

Mason (1.50)
Emery (1.65)

CAP CHARGE: 64.49
CAP CEILING: 64.30
CAP SPACE: -00.19

Move Meszaros out, and we officially have 03.81m in cap space. Give Gagne 02.50, and we have 01.31m in space without LTIRing Pronger. If you add Pronger's LTIR to that we have 06.23m in space.

Oops. I forgot that we get charged 0.10m for Bartulis and 0.18m for bonuses.

So...

CAP CHARGE: 64.77
CAP CEILING: 64.30
CAP SPACE: -00.47
MINUS MESZAROS: +03.53
ADD GAGNE: +01.03
LTIR PRONGER: +05.95

That's a good layout for the upcoming season. If they choose not to go with Gagne, what are Raffl & Laughton's hits? 900k?
