Cool. I hope he turns out to be something. It'd be really nice to be able to replace Fleury from within the organization

How about we hope for both, Fleury matures and Hartzell becomes a reliable option at 1 or 2!

obviously that would be nice. But a lot of us are at the point where it seems much more likely to replace him than for him to rebound.

as long as we end up with a goalie who doesn't evaporate in the playoffs i'm happy, but it sure seems to me like option one is more viable than option two...

He'll still be an RFA for one year after this contract, right?

If he has a good year, he'll get extended before that is a concern, I'd imagine. Wouldn't be surprised to see him leapfrog Zatkoff as early as this year.

Yeah you keep hoping that but all evidence suggest that ship has sailed.

I was watching the game where Sid got his teeth knocked out by Hatcher & then came back to score the OT goal against the Flyers the other night on ROOT. Fleury was a entirely different goalie. His legs were quick & active. Challenged on every shot & competed for ever puck.

After he won the Cup he lost his edge. I just don't see the same desire in him anymore.

Is he waiver eligible?

This counts as his second contract, since he signed late last season, IIRC.

So....because Fleury is bad at the game of hockey he instantly becomes a piece of ****? Gotcha.

It'd be nice if he or Zatkoff got a look in the Nhl this year. I bet Zatkoff would've last year if it was a full season.

A chat with #Penguins and former #Quinnipac goaltender Eric Hartzell on life as a professional
https://twitter.com/emptynetters/sta...48996392222720

Quote:
What was it like being a member of the Penguins immediately after your college career at Quinnipiac concluded?

"It was just fun. I’ve said it about 100 times, I was just a sponge … soaking up everything I could. Getting used to what the professionals deal with on a daily basis. Seeing how they live and how they handle themselves through ups and downs. I had a great time. I wouldn’t trade it for anything."

You were limited to a practice-only situations in the NHL, but what's different about the game professionally compared to college?

"It’s faster. It’s quicker. I think the biggest adjustment for me was the first day I got here, I was with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, [James] Neal and [Paul] Martin, [some] of the best shooters in the NHL. It was a big adjustment right away but it was fun. The release of the shot, the quickness, how big these guys are, how strong, just the game in general. It’s quicker, stronger, faster."

Why did you chose to join the Penguins?

"The best organization in hockey. I think there’s been some unbelievable players that came through this organization. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin. Every year these guys can win a Stanley Cup. Ray [Shero] presented me with an opportunity to succeed if I hold up my end of the bargain."

I hope he didn't get too used to the king-sized bed and first class flights. Travel in the A will be an eensy bit different, I suspect.

I'm interested to see how he and Zatkoff battle it out. Zatkoff had a down year, but he could still easily split the starts with Eric.

I liked Hartzell a lot at Quinnipiac, before we signed him. Yeah, he's older, but I thought he was superb in the Frozen Four. Single handedly kept them in it at times.

No, waivers have to do with games played or seasons as a pro.

Very happy about this. I like his compete level, his style and that he really seems to be a leader on the ice.

He kind of reminds me of Mike Smith in that he really knows how toread plays and use his size. Plus he also seems to have that same attitude on the ice. When I say a high compete level I mean through the roof.

I have a 'fan' telling me that he should be in the NHL and he will be the best goalie in the league.

I for one hope Fleury can have an amazing year. If the defense gives him a reason to calm down and he becomes confident, he will do great.
