Who is the ideal linemate for Datsyuk and Zetterberg?

A lot of people on the board seem to be disappointed that Abdelkader is likely going to start next year as the 3rd wheel to D and Z next year.

-If you were coach who on our roster would you put on a line with Datsyuk and Zetterberg, and why?

-If you could put any player in the league with D and Z, who would it be?

Any player: Alexander Ovechkin. Datsyuk and Zetterberg play superb defense while contributing on the scoreboard. They need that guy who isn't afraid to fire the puck when called upon, and he doesn't need to be the best defensively. Ovie is quick and physical too. He's the ideal player IMO.

On this roster, honestly I don't know. I would say have something like

Franzen - Datsyuk - Zetterberg
Nyquist - Weiss - Alfredsson

I think that would mesh the best.

Alfredsson.

It took Abdelkader a 10.4% shooting percentage when his career average is 6.5% just to score 10 goals in 48 games, the majority alongside Datsyuk. Keep in mind of those 10 goals 3 were banked off of him and 1(?) was an empty netter He also tallied a whopping 3, yes three, assists. To only have 3 assists when his supposed role is to be creating space and retrieving pucks shows that he isn't very good at it.

Outside of just picking any superstar, stylewise I would pick someone like Dustin Brown or Alex Steen. Guys who can play in the corners, retrieve the puck and stay in front of the net, but also score. That's why Abdelkader makes sense(for the gritty part), but also makes no sense(because he needs an open net to score).

Alfie, if it doesn't work out or rest of the line up won't work out, try Franzen there, then Tatar and then Abby.

I'd like to see any one of Brown, Stamkos, Stewart, Semin, Ov, Kovy (may not count), Perry, Kessel or Vanek there.

Vanek is a guy who could do a lot of damage on a line with those 2, IMO.

Malkin is a guy that I think would be the best fit. Big body, can pass and score equally as good, big one-timer and great all-around shot.

On our team I think Franzen is the best fit. Though that makes the rest of the lines harder to form, if you put him there.

Would do something like Kronwalled55 suggested:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Franzen
Nyquist-Weiss-Alfredsson
Tatar-Helm-Abdelkader
Miller-Andersson-Eaves

I would love to see Nyquist with them. He did not get enough time with either last playoffs and it drove me crazy. I believe it was game 7 against Chicago where we were down one when Nyquist found himself on a line with Z (only because Filppula was injured and through the lines in the blender all game) and of course they score a very pretty goal.

Abby is probably the best fit.

but since we are moving to east, little bit of experiment might not hurt

In the league? Dustin Brown, James Neal, David Backes, Bryan Bickell off of the top of my head.

On the team, I would say Alfie would give them the most productivity.

Franzen when his game is on is the best linemate for DZ. In the league, a guy like Bobby Ryan, Malkin

If Datsyuk and Z are playing well together it doesn't really matter who their linemate is. IMO lines are based the majority of the time on pairs, not threesomes. The third linemate usually is interchangeable.

League wide my top 3 would probably be:

1) Crosby: best puck possession player, can pass and shoot, real good in the dirty areas

2) D. Sedin: great puck possession player, great along the boards and on the cycle, can pass and shoot

3) Parise: great along the boards and on the forecheck and cycle, great nose for the net

On Detroit's roster... I don't know if there's a great fit anymore. There's not a Holmstrom who's a great puck retrieval player who also has vision, IQ, and loves being around the net.. And there's not a Hull who has maybe the best ability of all time when it comes to finding scoring areas while also being and underrated passer with the IQ of knowing that to get the puck in a scoring area you have to quickly find your teammates.

My top 3 I'd like to see would be:

1) Tatar
2) Alfie
3) Nyquist

For the first question if you want to get back to playing puck possession Alfredsson is probably your best bet. The only problem is we don't have any puck possession d-men like we've had with Rafalski and Lidstrom when we were at the top of our game.

So with that being the case I can see playing Mule with them. Weiss solidifies your second line however he doesn't have a big body unless you stick Abdelkader there. So I think your top two lines would likely be:

Z-Pavs-Mule
Abby-Weiss-Nyquist

The thing that most people are having trouble accepting is that Pavs wants Abby on his line. Pavs also liked having Homer on his wing and considering Pavs is one of the top 5 players in the game and one of the absolute top two-way players Babs is likely going to give him what he wants.

If you could put anyone on that line I'd say Stamkos. That guys is probably the best pure goal scorer in the world right now. That line would be comprised of three centers and Stamkos would be your right handed shot so you can put him on the right wing.

I disagree. The 3rd linemate plays a bigger role than given credit for. There's a reason why Samuelsson didn't look good with them, but then once Homer moves on the line they light up the world. There's a reason Dan Cleary has never looked good with them. And there's a reason why an aging Hull could still look great with them. You have to know how to play with them as well as having the ability. It's a lot easier said than done and it doesn't always mean better players are the better option. There aren't many linemates I'd take over Homer in that role in 07-08. He was great along the boards and even better at quickly finding them as soon as he won a puck battle.

I'm not sure I believe that.

The Filppula-Zetteberg-Hudler line 2 years ago was awesome.

The Filppula-Zetterberg-Cleary/whoever line last year sucked.

So maybe it was Hudler and Z who did the work?

I would put Alfredsson with them. Given his age I think both he and the team would benefit from that. A second line of Nyquist-Weiss-Franzen is sufficient enough imo.

In a fantasy world, I'll take Ovechkin.
