Every time the Flyers name came up in trade rumors – whether it was at the trade deadline last season or leading up to the draft and free agency – one name was constantly in the discussion:

Sean Couturier.

There’s no question that every other team that the Flyers talked turkey with coveted the 20-year-old forward. And there was no question that Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren had no intention of trading his talented two-way center.

Evidence of that came further to light Saturday, when the Flyers signed Couturier to a two-year contract extension.

Couturier, who is entering the final year of his entry level contract, inked a new deal with an annual cap hit of $1.75 million in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

After a breakout rookie season in 2011-12 after the Flyers selected him with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Couturier had four goals an 11 assists for 15 points in 46 games last season.

I think this will put an end to the Couturier trade rumors for a while (I know insert Jeff Carter joke here).

Good deal. Homer does well with his RFA contracts.

Good. Our forward group will continue to have a semblance of defensive skill.

But I thought Nashville was going to sign him to an offer sheet to get revenge on us for Weber??

Great move. Small cap hit...buys us time. No risk of him having a break out year and demanding big dollars next offseason.

Now just gotta get B. Schenn locked up and we're golden!

Really like the way the flyers are going right now with the draft and signing should be interesting to see who gets traded to free up some cap space but im really excited for the coming season.

How much of an increase cap hit wise is this from his ELC?

Great deal for the next two years, but this likely means he's a goner after that if he's successful.

Nah, proving his worth extension. There'll be more space by the time he deserves the big cash money wad.

As much as I like Couturier there's a chance his offense never comes around. There's no need to lock him up long-term right now.

Like Zod said, this is a bridge contract. It's great now, but if he plays very well over the next two years he's going to need a big raise. This is what Giroux did and he got paid handsomely.

well, you can say that about any young player

Couturier had a rough year, but he was putting up points in the AHL during the lock-out. I know that AHL success =/= NHL success, but he's still on the right track. He's already a solid defensive player, now we just have to wait for his offense, which we already know is there

Relax, man
still doesn't mean he's gone in 2 years. In that time, so many roster moves will be made. players will be gone, and the cap will increase

doesn't make much sense to claim he's leaving in 2 years

would you prefer Homer to sign him to a 4 year, $16m extension?

Giroux was a year away from UFA. He was a year removed from a 93 point season. The situations are very different & I'm fairly confident Couturier won't hit those numbers because of all his defensive responsibilities he's given.

Huh? I'm talking about the contract he just got. Two years isn't long-term.

I would say anything from four years & on is long-term to answer your question though.

Well yeah but there's no need for the Flyers to bank on it coming around right now. Two years is perfect for both sides.
