Come on, 4-1-4-1 is basically a 4-3-3. Mapp and Pisanu/Romero were clearly higher than the 3 central midfielders.

Yup. Teams that play 4-3-3 normally hold on to the ball a lot. ( Barca & Arsenal come to mind ). The best way to play a 4-3-3 though is to have a relatively big target man (Unelss its a 4-3-3 with a Fake #9, like Barca do with Messi), and to have two wingers that are able to cross the ball, but also attack defenders and have a striker mentality.

We didn't press like in a 4-3-3 that's for sure.

Pretty much 50% of the teams in EPL, La Liga or Ligue 1 are playing 4-3-3 right now. Playing possession football and playing on a 4-3-3 isn't correlated by any means.

Since when does playing 4-3-3 means we'll press ?

EDIT : I'm not saying Impact won't go for possession in the game. I'm just saying 4-3-3 doesn't necessarily means possesion.

Furthermore, Possession doesn't mean anything in the MLS.

True, but there's a difference inbetween the 4231 and the 433. Lots of teams play the 4231 these days, but it looks like a 433 due to the wing play. The teams that are actually capable of playing 433 aren't abundant. You need the right players, especially in the midfield and the wings.

Although I do agree that 433 doesn't directly mean possesion football, it is something that makes sense since your three midfielders are relatively close to each other, and therefore can help the ball move more fluidly

Interesting vid on the 4-3-3 btw.

I'm not saying that 433 automatically means more.possession I'm saying that us switching to a 433 likely means a more possession-oriented game.

Crowd is A-W-E-S-O-M-E tonight, quite the atmosphere at Saputo Stadium. I'm also loving the 4-3-3 formation, imagine it with Di Vaio-Paponi-Wenger for a moment..

Arnaud had a great game. Our midfield in general was much better than usual tonight. I'd like to see what MDV could do in this formation. We lacked a killer instinct tonight, we should have won the game. Oh, and please, start Smith, he deserves it and Nyassi was bad tonight.

Good game, they didn't allow 3+ goals for once.

Anyone check out the MLS Goalzo scoreboard?

It's astounding, the best soccer score card I've ever seen.

Absolutely wonderful stats, as well as the usual tweets, basic info, etc

Check it out:

We had a good game but simply no finish tonight. We missed Di Vaio badly. The 4-3-3 is promising thought.

Absolutely thrilling crowd tonight. Section 127 is hands down the best section of the stadium.

Great match by Mapp, but every attack had to pass on his side. In the second half, they never switched flanks and only relied on him and Camara on the right. Might have cost two points

It's been like that in the past couple of games... Last game, every attack went on Nyassi's side because Romero was god awful. And Schalli, both times, took too much time to sub in a better winger to help the attack.

Anybody noticed that Romero looked better behind the striker than on the flank?

And I agree, Schalli took too long to sub Nyassi out. Smith should've started the game instead.

Pisanu is almost never being played, when was the last time he started a game? Can we get rid of him already? He's in an awfully bad shape.

IMFC reserves vs Rochester, 2nd half soon

That's cause naturally Romero actually is a striker

EDIT: Blake Smith playing Striker.. And he almost scored a screamer from outside of the penalty box on the right flank. An absolute rocket going straight for the top of the net in the left corner. Wow. Grazed the crossbar

Blake Smith is playing amazingly today. Hes so much more confident on the ball. Hes doing stepovers, skills, running at defenders & taking powerful shots. I don't know if its a lack of confidence infront of the big MLS Crowds or something, but Schalli has to start playing him more. If his confidence from reserve games translates over to the MLS, we got ourselves a player. Give him game time for confidence

Yoann Gourcuff: 'Why not live in America? We will see!'
He's something that we could defiantly benefit from if healthy. His dad played for the Supra for one year, and Joey has a great relationship with the Lyon administration. So why not? If you don't know Gourcuff, he was dubbed as the next Zidane, but injuries, amongst other reasons, made him "underachieve". Still think of this goal everytime I think of him.

He's already a player, still raw though. But you can see he's really talented.
