Ryman doesn't think the Rangers will trade his client but he also thought the contract was essentially done when its not not. Newport handles the talks and not Ryman. The Rangers should look to trade this player. Newport told Zuccarello that other NHL teams are interested in him.
Who said Mashinter had leverage? We'll find out if 1.5 mil is too much for the Rangers soon enough. But you're right they may have to trade him.

Otherwise, I agree with your position that qualifying Zuke made sense by the organization. He is a top 6 material as well as a PP and shoot out specialist, which is clearly better than other guys who were not qualified. And in terms of his salary - if you compare his say $1.7 m contract to the likes of Duby or Anisimov - Zuke's is a better deal especially if you remember Hagelin's contract "justification" about inflation of old cap to the current. If he gets a two year deal $1.8 m or less it a great deal for the Rangers and a fair one for Zuke.
You misunderstood my post, although I believe Zuccarello earned a contract for this season. I wasn't saying the Rangers were necessarily right to tender him. I was saying it wasn't a mistake. If you believe that our GM isn't fully cognizant of our cap situation, our roster makeup, and the details of the way negotiations within the CBA work, that is foolish, and I'm not taking that back.

As for your comments, $1.8m is too much for him by about $300k at least. Benoit Pouliot got less than that as a UFA, and he's a better NHL player, at this moment, than Mats Zuccarello is. I don't think he'll sign for as little as Pouliot did, but that isn't the point.

What we have in Zuccarello is a player who has looked very good, not great, in his stints on the team, but is unproven in the capacity as an everyday player over a full NHL season. Despite what Hellion says, there is reason to doubt that he can be an everyday player over a full NHL season. His size, combined with average skating, calls that into question today the same way it did the moment we signed him. Yes, his skating used to be below average and now it's average. That's a good step in the right direction. But we aren't talking about ability, really. We're talking about physics and anatomy. Will his body be able to maintain effectiveness through a full year and into the playoffs? Will his skill be able to overcome the wear and tear that his body will experience? These are unanswered questions, and until they are, they are cause for doubt. Period.

But again, I think he earned a contract with his play at the end of last season. I hope he gets signed. And I hope that the answers to the two questions I asked are yes.

What turns you off is commentary? That is funny. You have hated on the guy regardless of how he plays basically nonstop.

Here are my top 15 reasons to hate Zooks.

1. He is 5-7
2. He is Norwegian
3. He has 3 names. Is he Italian or Norwegian?
4. He was only the teams second leading point playoff producer
5. Norway has a female reporter that says silly things.
6. His last name makes getting his jersey too expensive.
7. Why do we need his play making? We already score too much.
8. He looks like a character in a movie.
9. He can only score on the bigger ice sheets.
10. He can only score in the regular season
11. He can only score in shootouts.
12. He can only score in the playoffs
13. He can only score in the Olympics
14. His Euro based agent (Ryman) says questionable stuff
15. I like to hate

I'd be miffed with anything above 1.5.

I agree. I think Pouliot would've got more than what he signed for had he gone to arbitration with TBL. I think Pouliot has done more thus far in his career than Zucc. You cannot go off potential and assumptions to just hand Zucc a contract above $1.5 million.

It's never a mistake to extend a QO to a player you'd like to keep, arbitration or not. Nor is it a mistake to make a business decision to let go of a player you think is going to get too big of an arb award. Neither are mistakes.

Plus, I don't see how you can call it a mistake before we've seen the award itself. Maybe Sather is betting that it will be less that Zuccarello is asking for. And he might be right. It's way too early to pass judgment on this.

And you know what? Beyond that, if the award forces moves to be made, such as trading Pyatt, couldn't it easily be said that Sather chose to have Zuccarello over Pyatt on the roster? I'd be surprised it he was unaware of what the risks were in this scenario.
I sometimes respond without directly addressing someone because there are more than person who share the same opinion and I'm not going to respond to each post.

The Rangers gave Zuccarello leverage. Ryman made a comment in the recent article about his client having leverage in arbitration. He is right. The arbitration process inflates the value of the player. The NHL wanted to dump arbitration because its inflationary. The arbitrator splits the difference. That's not very hard. That's the problem. Teams can't walk-away from an award below $3.5M. It was slightly above $1M in the last CBA. The PA proposed keeping arbitration status quo and eliminating walk away. This was their position

NHLPA proposal from last November

Quote:
Salary Arbitration – Elimination of walk-away from arbitrator's decision, but clubs can still "walk-away" by not qualifying a player
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL...-20375246.html

So they compromised with raising it $3.5M. Its indexed so it will increase every season. It will be higher for 14-15.

In MLB,teams can't walk-away from arbitration awards. Teams don't tender the player a contract if they don't want the arbitrator involved. That's how the Yankees signed Russell Martin. NHL teams will need to use that option more and more. Its not worth it.

Quote:
The Los Angeles Dodgers declined to officially offer a contract to catcher Russell Martin before Thursday night's deadline for doing so to arbitration-eligible players after the sides failed to reach agreement on a new deal for the two-time All-Star and former Gold Glove winner. As a result, Martin is now officially a free agent and quite possibly has played his final game in a Dodgers uniform.

Zuccarello will end up getting more than the Rangers want to pay him. Its their fault. That was my point. They ****ed up.

We won't know until we see the numbers. Apparently they will come to an agreement before the hearing. But like I said before anything above 1.5 will bother me.

Offering Zucc 1.5 or less is lowballing him. That's the type of money you get for being a 10 point 8 mins/game 4th liner these days.

It's unusual, because Sather has been known to cut ties with players that push him beyond his willing salary range, or make demands that he's not willing to accommodate.

Lauri Korpikoski, and Nik Zherdev are two great examples of that.

I also agree that anything over $1.5Mn is too much money for Zucc. I also agree that he has leverage, but what choice did the Rangers have to not qualify him?
I mean, name me 1 player on the current roster, that has a better chance than Zucc to score in the shoot outs? Not many, so I think the Rangers are Ok wiht the extra couple of hundred K that he MIGHT earn, because of the valuable extra points he'll give the team at the end of the season.

The question is not Pouilet or Zooks. This team needs both guys to score some on low contracts. We have multiple players that do not produce points (Powe, Pyatt, Boyle, etc) and we have way overpaid players (Richards). Getting 40-50 points plus shootout wins from Zooks will be a bargain at 1.7 mill. Where are all the free agents that will do that?

Can an arbitrator award more to a player than a team has in cap space? I know we're close but just curious if anyone had the answer.

I must have. He only led the team in scoring as a 24 year old (admittedly in a year where we had no guy with a real high point total), was offered a reasonable contract by the arbitrator, and we let him go for nothing. Absolutely awful asset management.

Considering the polarizing stature of Zucc, one of the sides of the debate are gonna throw around such massive "I told you so's" when we round up our 82 matches for the coming season

We need pure skill guys on this squad. A competent power play coach will utilize him especially well. Get him under contract. I hope it's, in fact, 1.5 million because we will still have some wiggle room with the cap, but if he gets $2 mill, good for him and I'll be happy with it.

I agree. He had a fine season with that offensively inept 2008-09 team. He probably pushes them into a playoff spot in 2009-10 because, despite his massive flaws, he was a lock for 20 goals and 30 assists. I would have liked to see him play with Gaborik.
