Which DRW players are likely to play in the 2014 Olympics?

I'm going to guess:

Sweden:

- Zetterberg
- Alfredsson
- Kronwall
- Franzen
- Ericsson
- Guatavsson (maybe)

USA:

- Abdelkader
- Howard

Russia:

- Datsyuk

Czech Republic:

- Kindl

Slovakia:

- Tatar

Howard is going to have a tough goalie battle along the way.

Quick and Miller will likely be the top 2 goalies for the US. Miller is still very good and is playing on a VERY BAD team. Miller was the national hero for the US last olympics, if the US wins the gold then we are talking about one of the best goaltender performances in the olympics.

I actually didn't even think that through, I think he has an outside chance of making the team. I just got done reading an mlive article that mentions him and Abdelkader playing for the USA so I wrote both of them without thinking. I do think their solid performances at the WCs will make them high on the list though. Abby deserves to be on the USA team, but I'm sure a lot of you will disagree.

That 3rd goalie spot will be fun to watch:

Anderson, Howard, and Schneider.

I'm refraining opinion yet on Abby, I want to see what he does this season before stating whether he could make it or not. I wouldn't think he would be higher than 4th line.

If Abby makes team USA then Canada, Sweden and Russia won't see them as a threat. He's not good enough to play in the Olympics.

Howard will probably get the third goalie slot and play 10 minutes against Latvia

I don't think Abdelkader makes it. But he'll be considered. Will they have a camp for the Olympics?

How about Nyquist?

The others are pretty much set. I'd even give Jarnkrok, Jurco and Frk an outside shot of being considered for Sweden, Slovakia and Czech Republic.

Don't forget Babcock coaching again, according to TSN. Though I doubt this was in question.

Apart from Abby and Gustavsson, I think you've pretty much nailed it. I also think Nyquist has an good shot at making Sweden, but I'm definitely biased.

Believe it or not, Swedish goaltending is kind of in a lull. You've got Lundqvist, who is on top of the pile, but other than that it's guys like Fasth, Lindback, and Enroth.

All of them are currently a backup or splitting time to some degree, so it's hard to say who exactly will get the nod. But I agree Monster is a longer shot than any of them.

Meanwhile Finnish goaltending is at some kind of apex. Rask, Neimi, Backstrom, Rinne, Lehtonen, and Kiprusoff. Impressive list considering!

Are you serious?

Kane
Parise
Kessel
Backes
Kesler
Brown
Ryan
Pavelski
Oshie
Pominville
Stastny
Pacioretty
Van Riemsdyk
Stepan
Callahan
Wheeler
Legwand
Umberger
Okposo

There's 19 forwards right there that are night and day better than Abdelkader, and that doesn't even include some of the youngsters like Saad and Galy. And here's the kicker: Team USA has a ton of hard nosed forwards that play in the dirty areas, so it's not you even attempt to make the argument that they need that type of player. Because they have a bunch that are so much more effective.

So why exactly does Abdelkader deserve to be on Team USA? We are talking about the Justin Abdelkader that just had 13 pts playing half a season with Datsyuk right?

Yeah, Team USA is going to be another nightmare to play against, and it's going to be awesome.

Yeah Team USA doesn't have a ton of sexy names up front, but they really do have a good, deep squad that isn't afraid to play in the dirty areas. Basically a bunch of guys that you'd love to have on your team even if they aren't the most talented. They again will have the potential to play for a Gold medal.

He didn't make the team then, he won't get an invite now. The snide Cleary comments are pretty old by now and add nothing to the conversation.

I am. Looking at the players you just named, I'm would definitely want Abdelkader for my 4th line. It's not about picking the 15 (or so) best forwards from a country, you want to build a balanced team. Abdelkader grew a lot as a player last season and I don't think Wings fans give him enough credit, but I think that will change after this coming season. People are just sour towards Abby because they didn't like seeing him play with Datsyuk (and I was one of them), but he proved that he could be effective against top players in the end.

I'm not saying he's a lock or anything, but I think he very capable and would do a good job in the right role.

Callahan-Backes-Brown

That's a 4th line for team USA.

Abdelkader shouldn't even get an invite to try out. It's not even close.

Honestly, listen to what you're typing.

Players like Brown, Pacioretty, Callahan, Oshie, JVR, Wheeler and Okposo are likely to be 4th line wingers on Team USA. Please explain to me on what planet and in what role Abdelkader is a better fit? Honestly.

And once again, keep in mind that in your face players like Kesler and Backes will already likely be on lines 2-3.
