but truthfully this one would have worked out a lot better. i like Columbus. and it would be interesting to have Pittsburgh in our division.
The league corporates desired to interwine the Florida teams with the NE because of the snowbird factor- NE teams, especially those based in Canada make the Florida NHL arenas full and their owners register a lot of gate revenue right off the bat.

Yeah, the realignment is in poor taste when it comes to basic geography, and considering the extra wear and tear that the NE clubs will suffer just to additional floridian trips, it kind of sucks.

But in the end, it's all about the money.

Actually, to be honest, there would probably be just as much to make if the Florida teams were with the NY teams as the connection between NY and Florida is just as strong if not stronger than the connection with Canada.

As I've said multiple times, the Eastern Conference alignment was likely the result of the former Atlantic Division teams joining with a few others to block any alignment they didn't like. Remember it only takes 8 teams to defeat a 3/4 majority vote needed for realignment. There will be far more wear and tear caused by the fact that teams will be playing all teams in the other conference twice.

And as for extra wear and tear, under the old alignment, the Northeast teams played the Florida teams 4 times whereas under the new alignment, they will pay them 4 (every few years, 5) times. There will be far more wear and tear caused by having to play all Western Conference teams twice.

No, the Spider-Man division would be in a different league altogether because Spider-Man is in a different comics universe

If those ****** teams can only pull a profit due to patronage from snowbirds, I suggest they think about putting those teams in a position closer to the origin of snowbirds...

Love how there's only two teams in the "Atlantic" division anywhere near the Atlantic.
Except for TB and Florida, its' like the old Adams division

I had never considered that. I wonder how many of the ticket buyers down there are Snowbirds?

People would have more recognition? The Campbell conference was named after a person, as was the Wales (Prince of Wales). Patrick, Smythe, etc. were people as well. So if we are going to name them after people, why not use their historical names? Bettman changed them because they meant nothing to many Americans and I am betting that Lindsey, Howe, Orr, etc. wouldn't either. Sure hockey fans will know who they are, but nobody else will.

If historic names mean little to young fans, they should include names with the region they represent. For example: The Wayne Gretzky Western Conference, The Brett Hull Central Conference, The Bobby Orr Eastern Conference, and the Mario Lemieux Atlantic Conference. That way you can associate by region or by historic names who once played in those regions.
