Should Bergevin offer sheet Cowen?

I think Cowen could be the physical defenseman we need to take the next step forward. The possibility of having him in our line-up would solidify our top 6 for years.

Now pre-Emelin:
Gorges- Subban
Markov- Cowen
Tinordi- Diaz

Now with Emelin:
Cowen - Subban
Markov - Emelin
Gorges - Diaz/Tinordi

Future:
Cowen - Subban
Beaulieu - Tinordi
Gorges - Emelin

Ottawa would match, they have 13 million in cap space and we have 4 if I'm not mistaken.

Sens aren't a Cap team, meaning they have an internal budget below the Cap. However, they are well below the Cap and I have no doubt they would come up with the money to ward off any poaching attempts on a player they would consider a key piece for the team, such as Cowen. Habs have some Cap room but not a lot to make some huge offersheet to a guy. So in the end, we offer sheet, Ottawa matches and is POd with us and may look at payback some other time, and our PK takes note of the big money we were prepared to pay Cowen.Again though, we don't have the room anyway, and I don't think MB is the kind of GM to try this.

What? I'm not guving away any 1st round picks to overpay Cowen when Tinordi is already NHL ready.

Cowen is not worth giving up 1st/2nd round draft picks, nor would he be a first pairing defenseman with the Habs.

No need for Cowen since he's not a righty. It's like the people who wanted us to move up for Morin, we already have Tinordi, what's the point?

Cowen is an absolute stud. He's who we hope Tinordi becomes.

I voted yes, but in reality we'd just piss Ottawa off, they'd match and perhaps want revenge, and we don't have PK signed yet.

No...I do not like offer sheets. We get are guys through the draft, trades and UFA. I do not know why the owners did not eliminate stupid offer sheets when they signed the new deal with the players union!!!

I was on the same boat as you regarding Morin, but the difference with Cowen is he would solidify our top 4 immediately, and slot in next PK on our first pair right off the bat.

He's still not top pairing material, as stated in the OP.

I wouldn't put all my eggs in the basket off, "He's a stud so we'll pay him big money and hopefully he meets that criteria." Plus, as mentioned, Ottawa can and will match anything the Habs throw at him. They have the cap space.

No, Ottawa will match and we don't really have much space to make an offer sheet that they would refuse to match.

EDIT:Accidentally voted yes.

I'm all for offer-sheeting him. 1st+2nd+3rd, that's fine to give up for a player of Cowen's calibre. Of course, I don't believe we'd be giving it up, Ottawa would match. But it would sting them financially. Whether that would end up having an effect on their ability to compete this year or not, I don't know, but that would be the main objective.

Getting Cowen to sign an offersheet with our team is probably not viable, though, even if you throw $4M at him? (which would just be a 1st+3rd I think). But who knows. It would surely be worth a try IMHO.

The offer will be matched or we will be stuck with an horrible contract and lose draft picks, so no.

At least sign Subban to an extension that pays him more then you're signing Cowen for before you offer sheet him.

Problem is Sens will match any sane offer. Also, with the new CBA, it eliminates front-loaded contracts la Shea Weber.

Try to get Mclrath via trade before you give up too much for Cowen.

I would but only after we extend PK.

Cowan is a stud and he's going to be a very good NHLer. Adds a ton of grit to our soft defensive core. Tinordi is going to be a good one as well but Cowen is already there.

A blue line with Tinordi, Emelin and Cowen is pretty freaking scary. Add Markov, PK, Beaulieu with Gorges and you have a very physical, very defensive and well rounded D corp.

Cowen is just what the doctor ordered. If not him, someone very similar in size and physicality would be EPIC.

Like Cowen but Sens would match.

What about Derek Stepan? NYR is in cap hell. Maybe we could offer to make a trade prior to offer sheet. DD+ ??

Stepan was their best player this season (other than Lundqvist) so no way in hell they do that, especially for DD+. It'd have to be something like Gallagher coming back to them.

I like the fact that McIlrath is a righty. Is he close to be NHL ready? Because if he's not I don't really see the point with Pateryn knocking on the door and Ellis needing another season in the minors.

I voted no but I forgot we're talking about Ottawa here. Anything to screw with them is fine by me.
