I understand where you're coming from, but as a selector (not a developer) of talent, you'd have to attempt to build towards the future event, not the general future: I think USAH sees Trouba as a better player than Petry, and in that case, I wish them luck.
Team Canada and Sweden have repeatedly taken teams to the WHC and had youngsters either as extra F or D - just as a type of developmental opportunity.

Similar thing happening for Team USA. Obviously there's been a bit of anti-Petry bias on their behalf in years past, but I think this is beyond that - it's just a developmental opportunity for these kids at camp. None of them are coming along to Sochi.

Another guy in a similar boat is Andy Greene. Definite top pairing defenseman. But just not a guy Hockey USA has been a fan of. They love their former WJHC kids, or guys that came up through the USANDTP

I feel WHC is a world different from the Olympics (no pun intended). But I agree, especially on that Andy Greene part.

And they invited Seth Jones?!? Okay, maybe they're just nutty.

I really don't understand it, especially DeKyser but whatever I guess. Gives Canada a better chance.

Not really because Petry wouldn't have made the team anyway

You guys are all arguing peripheral anomalies among WC invitees so far.

The biggest head scratcher:

How was Grebeshkov not on Russia's invite list? Man, oh man.

True, they're actually pretty deep on the backend. If anything he'd be an extra.

If I'm Dubnyk, I don't pick up the phone when they call for the next WHC.

He's declined significantly the last couple of years in the KHL, it's not a surprise.

The real head scratcher was Mact signing him for the Oilers.

And ignore his only opportunity to represent his country?

Doesn't make much sense.

I didn't think I need to put the in. Haha.

I was definitely kidding on that one though Tarus. If I was to be serious for a second, Belov being left off the roster is an actual head-scratcher considering his supposed 'one of the best KHL defensemen last season' play.

Ah, my bad.

Saw a few people putting him up for the Russian team invite list, and figured it was serious

The word for players trying to make Canada's Olympic hockey team is simple -- you've got to be able to skate.

After winning gold on an NHL-size rink at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada will be moving back onto the larger international ice surface for the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.

And as Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman put it: "There will be more of a premium placed on skating."

Taylor Hall should be on that team. You need speed on a larger ice surface, Canada generally gets themselves into trouble when they send big, lumbering teams onto international sized ice surface.

It's a different game.

Me too, me too.

I always have a hard time picturing Hockey Canada selecting Oilers players but Hall has proven himself, I know he'll have a great season again next year so it's just up to the staff to decide what kind of team they want to build.

If they want natural wingers there's no way Hall doesn't make the team but if they decide to load up on off-position centers then he has a lot of strong competition.

Taylor Hall was a top 10 forward in the NHL last season. Unless he gets off to an awful start next year then he is surely on the team. Toews and Doughty were important for the 2010 team despite being very young players, I would be shocked if Hall is left off the team.

No mention of Hall or Eberle in TSN's article on the Olympic Orientation invitees.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=428191#YourCallTop

And some people still doubt the east's anti-Oilers agenda? They're probably just pissy because they excluded Hall and Eberle in their mock roster on Friday.

Part of me hopes that neither Eberle or Hall make it. Take the rest and make a run at making the playoffs...that's more important to me than watching Canada mail it in at another Olympics on the big ice.

Meh, the media's opinion is only that, opinion. If Hall plays next season how he played this season, he'll make the team. Same with Eberle, if he plays like 2 seasons ago.

Well, if they do take Hall, then they might not mail it in

If they put together a team full of slugs, they will get run over on big ice yet again.

BUT, if they add some young players that can skate I think they'll do just fine.

You add a Tavares, Giroux, Hall, etc to the wing of an Olympic returner like Toews, Sid and Bergeron then it could add an element they haven't had in a while.

Hall makes the team imo. Yzerman wants skating? Hall's one of the fastest skaters out there, he's made for competitions like this, he's young and they should groom him for the future. Out of all Canadian LW's currently playing I'd say Nash and Hall are the best.

You just can't turn down a guy like Hall, he's got the drive to be a difference maker in a big tournament. He'll make the team and I think he'll be a big part of it too.

CP is blowing their loads that Schultz invited to camp. Like anyone here thought otherwise.

Well Matheson did.
