The New Jersey Devils made three trades prior to the start of free agency:
To NJD: Mike Smith
To Car: Jeremy Morin, NJ 1 2014, NJ 4 2015
I definitely think I overpaid on this one. I like Morin and am pretty sure he will be in the NHL this year. But, I needed a starting goalie and don't have much cap room. Smith is signed pretty cheap for 2 years and is an above-average starter.
To NJD: Colin Greening, Brock Nelson, SJ 2 2014
TO SJ: Jared Cowen, NJ 4 2014
I had an abundance of D, and Greening should give me some depth at forward that I need. I like Nelson a lot, although I think he tops out as a second liner.
To NJD: Jussi Jokinen, CBJ 3 2014
To CBJ: Nikita Nikitin
Probably favors Columbus a little given that Nikitin is an RFA while Jokinen is a UFA, however, Russia. That said, Jokinen will slot in nicely as the third line center. Puts up decent points, solid defensively and great on faceoffs.
Drewskie will provide some defensive depth whereas the Winnipeg trade will provide some cap room. Rumor has it that Smyth's third line left wing spot will be taken by the recently acquired (and much cheaper) Colin Greening, leaving the Devils lines as follows:
