Franson/Kadri/Gunnarsson were essential to this offseason. Nonis decided to go in a different direction and come back to these three hoping they'd be ready to sign the papers when he got to them. It was predictable and inevitable the minute we saw "Bozak resigns/Clarkson signs".

Funny how people are ripping Nonis for not singing Franson, yet Brian Burke couldn't do it for a while last season either. Attitude problems? Are you guys forgetting this guy signed a two-year contract in Sweden? Seems like a head case.
Some Leaf fans are embarrassing to say the least.
This is something I keep coming back to.
-When he first got here, he was quite vocal about not getting the ice-time he thought he deserved under RW.
-Last year, it took quite a while to get him signed. He signed for 2yrs in Sweeden and threatened to stay.
-Now, we're having difficulty signing him again and it's rumoured he's asking for too much money yet again.I'd suspect a deal will get done, but he and his agent won't be allowing any UFA years to be eaten up.
That's what happens when you hand out crazy contracts to players like Clarkson.
It doesn't just impact the player you signed.
It also impacts the other players you are trying to sign.
Why should a free agent get a better deal than an existing Leaf player?
I am sure that other Leaf players are also looking at what Clarkson got paid when deciding what they are worth to the team.
This is a typical stage of negotiations with an RFA that is asking for an unreasonable amount of money. It would be stupid not to try and organize a deal to another team if his contract demands don't reduce. Look at all the rumours and speculation that arose when Subban and O'Reilly were holding off in contract negotiations. Just like any other RFA.
This is not unlike Franson at all, he does this every time contract negotiations come around. At the end of the day he will work out a deal he likes and if he can't he will be shipped out to a team that will pay him his contract demands....if any will match them.
That's exactly right. Just look at the numbers Franson posted and it proves that he has the leverage in negotiations:
*3rd overall on Leafs in playoff scoring with 6 points (3G/3A)
*3rd overall on Leafs in playoff ice time (behind Phaneuf and Gardiner)
*Best shooting percentage in playoffs among Leafs defensemen at 20% (and only behind MacArthur in that category)
*Finished 4th overall on Leafs in regular season scoring and 1st among Leafs defensemen with 29 points (4G/25A)
*Tied for 6th overall in NHL among all defensemen in scoring
*Finished 4th overall in NHL in assists by defensemen
There is no way he takes less than what Gunnarsson just signed for.
lol. Franson would cost you a mid 1st round pick. Or a solid prospect.

You guys are going to be extremely disappointed when you don't get a top prospect or 1st rounder for Franson in return if he is moved.
If you do somehow find a desperate GM(who needs the cap space and is extremely desperate for defense help) and get that offer, you run and rejoice on the hills.
B level prospect, a player like Cousins from the Flyers(potential to be a very good agitating 3rd line winger who has good hands and scoring ability) and a 2nd/3rd rounder. If I was a GM and the want was more, I would politely decline. Too much for one good 48 game season.
You guys pissing and *****ing about Nonis are ridiculous.
Firstly, you have no idea how the negotiations are going.
Secondly, If you think Franson deserves anything over about 3.75, you're overvaluing him.
Nonis is a ****ing professional. At least let him make an actual decision before judging him, rather than assuming the sky is falling after reading a god damn tweet.
Firstly we do have an idea of how negotiations are going, this topic was made because Dregger tweeted that they can't afford Franson and trade talk with him will heat up. Dregger is literally Family to Nonis.
This tells us that Nonis can't negotiate his way out of this cap situation he found himself in by signing some outlandish ufa contracts on July 5th. So the Leafs will trade Franson for less than he is worth to free up space for Kadri and Fraser, and losing a top 4 defender for those reasons, to me, is unacceptable.
Dave Nonis just said yesterday he is not worried about Kadri Franson and Fraser being signed already it's only July and there is no red flag. If doesn't get Franson signed we take a step backwards with our d
