Mason will be higher than 28 after this season. I'm not even worried.

Higher than 28, like 29 or 30?

Mike Smith at #6 is the only guy who is several places above where I'd rank him.

it really doesn't mean anything. a lot of where these guys are ranked are due to the play of the team in front of them. rankings smankings. the last 10 are pretty much a joke as far as proving themselves consistently. There's really only 5 or 6 goalies that you could put on any team and get that goalie regardless of the team in front. the rest are products of environment at an NHL level.

I still think Lundqvist stands alone as the best goaltender in the NHL. That guy is incredible.

However, guys like Rask, Rinne, Quick, Price, and Luongo are better and will probably finish better than Mason.

Guys like Miller and Ward are better than Mason but may not finish better than him because of their teams.

The rest in an assorted mess of strong players and relatively decent starters made to look better by their team. Mason will likely fall right into this category. So assuming Lundqvist along with the five I mentioned above will be better than Mason this year stats wise, our young goaltender can finish anywhere be 7 and 30 among starters (assuming he's the starter).

I'd say 15-22ish is a fair estimate considering the team in front of him.

That puts him in the 0.915 to 0.910 range as far as save percentage is concerned.

Also noted, our average shots against per game over the last 4 years is 28.6, or 2345 in an 82-game season.

So assuming our goalies combine in some way to stop 0.910 percent of shots, we end up letting in 232 goals.

It puts us...

14th in defense last year (on a weighted 48-game scale). We were 23rd.
11th in defense in 2011-12. We were 20th.
11th in defense in 2010-11. We were 11th.
And 11th in defense in 2009-10. We were 15th.

I don't think so dude. If he looks good it'll be because of his strong play and that alone. We aint trying to protect him. he's on his own with laviolette in charge.

i have the feeling Mason will do well in Philly..

he just doesnt seem like the guy who will implode. hes done that and no doubt learned and matured.

sure he will have wins n loss's but i strongly feel like we finaly got the right guy in the pipes..

i'd love to say the same for Emery, but i view him as a stopgap. not a going forward type solution.. and his hip scares me ****less..

Yep.
The guy who lost his starting job to Niitty and his fragile hips in Tampa (this is coming from a huge Niitty fan btw) a few yrs back. Sure he could've improved but I doubt the turn around was so quick, he's most definitely a result of the Cyotes' style of play. How people (Yahoo writers in this case) don't get this I'll never understand. Smith is garbage and IMO isn't a top 20 goalie let alone 6th.

The same guy had Bryzgalov at #9 two years ago.

Smith & Bryzgalov are two great examples as to why goalies under Dave Tippet shouldn't be ranked in the top 10.

What about when one of the top 10 goalies plays for Tippet?

Mike Smith is way too high.

I have no faith in Mason.

Mason has the talent to be good. He showed it in CLB at times when their poor defense made him see 30+ shots a game. He keeps his head on straight he can be a very good goalie. He has the talent and watching him play since his rookie season in CLB, he can be good. Hoping the change of scenery is good. This is how semi-average goalies become good when they join another team.

Honestly, Mason gets down on himself after he lets in a ****** goal. This then affects his play. He REALLY has to stop doing that and refocus. He did show improvement on this with us so hoping that continues.

Is Smith or Bryzgalov a top 10 caliber goalie to you?

I have faith in Mason, I don't know about him being a top 10 goalie but he has a lot of potential. As mentioned before maybe a change of scenery will help.

Given the criteria -- only starters -- and explanations, I found the overall list fair. Of course, I'd move several names around.

Lower:
Bob (has potential to be top 5 and played that way this season, but still needs to prove it)
Niemi
Elliott

Higher:
Anderson
Lehtonen
Miller (~10-11)
Pavelec

And Emery should be around 17-20 on that list if he were touted as the starter.
