ROSTER EMERGENCIES

When injuries or suspensions result in insufficient cap room and a shortage of skaters for more than one game, teams can — after the first game of such shortage — recall replacement players provided they have a cap hit less than or equal to the league’s minimum salary plus $100,000, ie. $625,000 in 2012-13.

LTIR is different

Yeah that's the whole thing with Franson right now and Fraser to a lesser extent. If Franson and Kadri are both at 3 though they should be fine
Play around on CapGeek, It will be tricky even with 22 roster players.

For sure. Sorry bout that, wasn't pegging that on you. More of the general population that believes it's the case. Won't be the first time a team has to use the extra cap wiggle room during the offseason.

There's IR and LTIR.

A player on IR (expected to miss 7+ days) can be replaced on the roster (a team could then have 24+ players), but his cap hit still counts.

A player on LTIR (10+ games/24+ days) can obviously be replaced, and his cap hit still counts, but the team can go over the cap by his cap hit, if need be.

So?
Because of the bonus cushion it wont count against the cap anyway.

Took me all of about 30 seconds.
If we need more cap space send Liles and Ashton down on off days.

If we have to we can send any players that arent waiver eligible + Liles down on off days to create some breathing room. Several teams have done this before.

The bonus cushion can only be used for bonuses, and the $6.17M that the leafs presently have available takes Gardiner's possible bonus into account.

Otherwise, their cap space would be $5.87M.

Nonononono! Leaf fans have been saying Franson is much better then Luke Schenn and Schenn makes 3.5m a year....... So atleast 4m for Franson is worth it. No Leaf fans?

Better offensively yes. Defensively, not quite sure. I'd say they're pretty comparable salary wise.

Wouldn't mind trading Franson, we've got way too many OFD and he's just another one. He won't significantly improve anything on a team besides they're powerplay. Would gladly trade him if the price is right!

Wait for the Season, than talk *****.
That's fair.

But at the same time, many players overpay for free agents. Drury, Gomez, Redden to name a few. Personally, I don't believe he'll be on the field of these guys, but he definitely won't be worth the money he's making. That's just my opinion. And before someone says it's because he's a Leaf, I even said this before Free Agency.

Thank you. I've never said Franson sucks before. I said earlier in a past thread that the pairing of Gardiner + Franson might be worrisome defensively, that's all. They both have big offensive upside, and I believe Franson will be a great player in not too long. If the Leafs can retain him, then that's great for them. You won't see my opinion change.

Yes but by both being in Toronto, they can drop Liles for a game and have cheap replacement on hand, ready to go. Other teams might need to fly in a guy. It does make a difference. Trust me, I wish Philly still had their AHL team in Philly.

Fair enough man, I do believe you said that actually, cause to be honest, I thought it seemed a bit high and the term a little long initially, but I don't want pass to judgement until I see what he can or can't do, I am excited to see him on a new team, new coach, how he is used....ect....almost exactly how you probably feel about Bobby Ryan. I want to give him a chance to earn his deal, rather than counting him out before the season starts. I trust my GM's assessment skills and want to see how it plays out.

Ahhh the Rangers, Drury was one of my favourite players too.

It's terrible, Morgan Rielly is not being traded unless its an overpayment.

So Leafs have no cap space left after that and trade Kadri for?

You consider this fitting under the cap? The closest the Leafs have ever been to the cap is within $500k. You need to leave space for injury call ups, especially if that's only a 22 man roster. You also don't have Fraser on that roster at all despite him being guaranteed to have a contract. If that contract is over $925k, you're over the cap even with a 22 man roster if you bury him in the minors.

I understand that.
Another poster brought up Gardiner's bonus like it would be a problem. I was pointing out that it wasn't.
