Good deal for the Jets, looks to me like Wheeler has found his "jazz" on the Jets team.

If you compare what a RFA and a UFA make, you're gonna have a bad time.

Clarkson's contract set the bar. Even so Wheeler is much more worth his contract than Clarkson is.

Good deal for both parties and I think 2 years from now people will be saying "oh man that Wheeler is a steal at 5.6"

To the guy arguing that players like Wheeler shouldn't be making 5.6, well he's a first line winger on a kid range rich team, they can afford to overpay a bit here to attract more interest from others outside and in by locking up core members for good term and fair money.
If Wheeler was signed thru this season and headed to free agency, he be looking for around the term and money Clarkson/Horton got. On the top end of things, a team desperate for offence might be willing to give him 6 million per. He has scored at pace well within the realm of these type of comparables if you considered it as him going to ufa already.
I understand the worries about the lost time in hockey, but it's simple economics man, the demand for the product is high while the supply is low, and it seems no matter he amount of missed time, the fans keep coming back to spend more and more. Nothing you can do about it because you can't control the spending patterns of others. Just accept that we get to witness the best product of hockey entertainment on the earth.

If you feel so strongly about the situation. I challenge you to go thru the net whole season with not purchasing one NHL related product. If you can do so, than I'm willing to accept your opinion at higher value than the others who continue to fight this argument to death yet can't back up their words.

You don't seem to realize that they bought 5 years of UFA and one of RFA...

Unless it was a nice (but futile) try.

That's why its a good deal, RFA's still don't have the leverage UFA's do.

I think this is a pretty fair deal. Good for the jets locking down a solid player like Wheeler. Perhaps its my size conscious habfandom talking but that guy is huge and can play, you definitely wanna lock those types into your team.

You're right.

I'm ashamed and debased...

EDIT: I'll have to search for a few posts where I gave the wrong info...

I was too lazy to look at Section 12.3(a)...

Wheeler is 27 in August. So he's effectively getting UFA money for UFA years.

All RFAs are not the same.

He could have signed a one year contract and go for a pot of gold. Risky if injured.

He gave up 5 years of UFA.

So yes, it makes the Clarkson deal look ridiculous.

Are fans this insuler? Are you telling me you haven't paid any attention to Wheeler's production over the past few years?

Yeah, you don't give that type of money to a guy like Wheeler. Better suited for Clowe or Clarkson.

While I appreciate your response, I'm a 33 year old guy who isn't known to collect much. Outside of a Leafs jersey, I don't own any NHL products and haven't been to a live game since 1991 because I can't justify the cost of the tickets. I love hockey, watching it, playing it, discussing it.... doesn't matter, but I won't spend hundreds of dollars on unnecessary products, because I don't like living in a house full of junk and clutter. In short, your challenge won't be an issue for me .

As a Leafs fan, I can tell you that I'm not a fan of the Clarkson contract either, though I do like the player.

Love the comment about Wheeler being a top 15 scoring RW in the league during a shortened 2012/2013 campaign! "I led the Majors in 9th inning doubles during the Month of August!".

Why do people compare UFA and RFA deals? They aren't even close to the same.

Anyways, overpaid in money, but made up for it in term. Decent deal.
