Setoguchi - outscored Clarkson last year.

Clarkson's best year: 80 GP, 30 G, 16 A, 46 P
Setoguchi's best year: 81 GP, 31 G, 34 A, 65 P

Average players gettin PAID these days.

That's a lot to commit to a player like that. So many deals like this have backfired.

Why don't we take a look?

1) Blake Wheeler has a career high 63 points and is coming off 41 pts in 48 games. Has has 1 season below 40 pts in his career.

2) Devin Setoguchi has a career high 65 points and is a consistant 20-20 or so guy.

3) Michael Frolik has a career high 45 points, has had a diminished role on the Blackhawks the last 2 seasons and has suffered offensively. Fantastic defensive forward.

4) Matt Halischuk has career high 28 points, solid energy forward.

Looks fine to me. Clarkson just barely outscored our 3rd line RW in their best seasons.

If you'd rather have Setoguchi on your roster than Clarkson, I don't think this discussion can go any further. Plus, talk to me next summer when you'll have to pay Setoguchi 4.5 to keep him, then we can talk how useful/cost effective players are to their respective teams.

Guess you're not taking into account that Overratedguchi was playing with Thornton and couldn't even out produce a guy who has been in the AHL for years he's so bad.

Listen man i'd love for Clarkson to be this Lucic type player for Toronto but it's just not going to happen.

It is a terrible contract and it will continue to get worse every single year. He brings intangibles that are great but he will simply never live up to that contract, he just won't it's impossible.

So give the Clarkson pump up a rest until he deserves it ok.

I'd rather have Setoguchi any day over Clarkson. Its not just that he's better, its also the contract that Toronto paid to get him. Esssh, eh.

And once Jokinen's unfortunate 4.5m contract is up next year, not problem paying Seto more to stay if he's earned it.

Other players being overpaid doesn't make this deal look any better.

5.6 is a bad deal for a top-15 scoring RW?

You actually think he would've got less in free agency?

Money is getting to be like middle relievers in MLB, out of hand. 5.6 mil for Wheeler on a long term deal?

I really like this player and I'm very jealous that Winnipeg just nailed him down for 6 years. Congrats Blake, congrats Winnipeg. Fair deal for what he brings and if the Jets can find some Cs to complement these big wingers and defensemen, you'll be a scary team. WPG is a team I'll be watching lots of in 2013-14.

9th in scoring among RW's then 15th the next year over the past two seasons. What would that have warranted on the open market if Clarkson and Clowe are getting 5-5.5m? Wheeler would have been offered a 7 year $43.5m deal from some team in UFA, we locked him up for 5 years of that UFA status.

People need to seriously look into what Wheeler has grown into the past two seasons, great deal and fair value.

Probably a fair market value, but it really has to make you appreciate some of the pre-lockout contracts particular a guy like Carter who will be making less money for similar point production, a lot more goals, and better defensive play.

I love seeing the divide between posters who have an idea of who Blake Wheeler is and who just loves bashing other teams signings.

Comparing Wheeler and Clarksons contracts? totally reasonable guys. Lets just ignore the whole open market factor.

Ok contract when you compare with what has been signed lately, excluding the Couturier contract that was a steal.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Definitely not a bargain money-wise, but the term does mitigate that to an extent. And I hate to say it, but "tad high" might become par for the course with future Winnipeg contracts, given that it's probably the most highly-taxed jurisdiction in the NHL.

Very happy that Wheeler is locked up for six seasons, Jets cannot afford to lose him.

5.6M? Jesus. He's scored at a 65-70 pace in the last two seasons though, so I'm not too surprised. Looks better than deals like Wisniewski and Zajac, at least.

Look at his cap hit comparables:

http://www.capgeek.com/comparables/?player_id=218

Out of those 20 guys, who is a better value? MSL, Tavares, Elias, Sharp, Hossa, Kessel, would be better value, but some only slightly. The majority of those comparables have less value (contract vs. points, etc.) compared to Wheeler.

It is a good deal.

Would have liked him signed for less, but love that it buys up 5 UFA years. He's a pretty important part of our top line and seems to love playing in Winnipeg. One more RFA left to go, Chevy.
