This is pretty fair value. He's produced a 65-70 point pace for 2 seasons in a row + 60 point pace in the 23 games after being traded from Boston.

Hey, I'm happy with Setoguchi, and I'm glad you're happy with Clarkson. I was simply pointing out the roster depth that you brought up.

His pace has actually been a bit better then that. Blake had a miserable start when he first started playing in Winnipeg. He didn't have a goal in the first 17 games. After he potted his first one he caught fire and it hasn't slowed down. In his last 111 games (since the slow start) he has had 98 points in 111 games. This would put him on pace for over 70 points.

In 3 years, 5.6M will look like nothing. Good deal.

A lot of money for a guy who hasn't hit 20 goals since his rookie year, but hey.

If you want to frame it that way, sure. Top 15 in points among RW's for the past two seasons is another way of looking at it.

1.1 million overpaid but Jets fans don't seem to care so why should we. They're happy. Really all that matters.

Aren't you clever. It's unlikely that he wouldn't have scored more than 20 in a full season.

People are acting like its 6.5 instead of 5.6. Calm down. Its market rate.

There is never going to be a contract signed that won't have its share of detractors on these boards.

Except it's really not. He's way ahead of people in the 4.5 range.

Damn right we're happy. I like forwards that produce at elite rates. They're nice to have.

You think the David Clarkson contract is the worst in the entire NHL?

He hasn't even played a game yet.

This deal ranks Wheeler 42nd in cap hit for forwards; he's ranked 30th in the NHL in total points over the last two seasons. Seems like a good deal for the Jets if he keeps that up.

Okay, so I admit I don't get to see Wheeler on a regular basis...

But can someone please explain to me why everyone is saying he is worth 5.6mill/season whereas people have been bashing the Gagner 4.8mill/season?

Gagner and Wheeler are BOTH ~ 0.62 points per game on average looking at their whole NHL careers.
They played the same amount of games last season and Gagner scored only 3 less points than Wheeler.

Gagner is 3 years younger yet has played more games and overall scored more points...

But apparently Wheeler is a top 1st line RW, but Gagner is barely a second line C?

I'm joking, man.

He's always been a good player, really found his stride in Winnipeg. Just ask any Bruins fan what they think of when they hear his name. 99% of the time it will be offsides. Blake never did anything bad to us, I still like him.

In the 151 games since being traded to Atlanta, Wheeler has a 0.80 PPG which equates to ~65 points in an 82 game season.

Not to mention that his PPG has done nothing but improve since the trade:

0.74 in Atlanta
0.80 first year in Winnipeg
0.85 this past season

He is being considered a first line RW cause he produces like one.

Just goes to show how many people don't watch Jets games or know anything about the Jets in general.

Good signing, fair value right now as it buys some UFA years. I don't see this contract ever being a huge steal as IMO he's close to his peak offensively, but still a very solid deal.

Not overpaid one bit. Young player that has already scored 64 points and is only getting better. Win win contract.

Seems like overpayment now. But over the length of the contract it could become a decent contract.
