We're finding out that's it's really not that easy to outscore your problems.

Pitching has been disastrous. Like not even below average. It has been beyond turrible.

3 starters have had injuries this year. One is done for the season. One is about to return but has missed significant time. One is apparently dealing with back issues. Add to that all of them are pretty much having their worst career seasons this year. Lost Reyes for a long time. Lawrie spent time on the DL and has been real bad this year. JPA continues to get worse every year. Our defence has been horrible etc..

Control is a huge concern. I wouldn't count on him for next year.

Terrible starting pitching
And there aren't too many hitters hitting with a good average
So they don't come through with guys on base enough

Yep Morrow being one.

Dickey is going to be a year older.
Who knows what will happen with Johnson.
Rogers looks like he could possibly be a decent #5
Romero is a longshot to comeback
Drabek, Hutch etc are all question marks.

Buerhle is really the only pitcher I trust on a regular basis.

Yup and his ERA won't be that good.

Arguing balls and strikes. Does this affect Ortiz as much as it does Bautista or does he deserve to go on tirades every once and awhile?

Ortiz is one of the best DHs ever. Bautista thinks he is Ty Cobb.

Two words: starting pitching. Starting pitching is squarely to blame for this joke of a season.

If Bautista did that he would get thrown out of the game by the ump and given a 5 game suspension.

Can't blame Ortiz. Managers should be texting to the bullpen, anyway.

They don't give players suspensions when they smash a gatorade tub.

He should have to pay for that phone though.

Ortiz got tossed for that right? RIGHT?

Funny, I was just thinking about this the other day. If a player lost his head and started using the bat as a weapon.

agree Ortiz has been doing his thing for a decade and Jose started 3 years ago to hit homers.

Ortiz has track record to question umps....not saying its right but has the proven track record.

CJ Edwards a young decent arm whos all the way down in A ball.

Just a bunch of meh really.

Edwards is pretty solid prospect. Olt had vision problems this year. Once he corrected that he started playing better.

His k rate is like 43% and that is scary for sure but he does pick up walks and maintains a obp over 300 which is a positive IMO. He is also 19 so he can also improve as he gets older with pitch recognition. He'll likely strike out a bunch but I don't think he'll maintain that high a k rate. Let's not forget he has 26 hr's and 8 stolen bases so he has a ton of power and enough speed to steal the odd base.

I posted this a couple pages back:

In his chat yesterday, Keith Law was pretty adamant that Stroman is a reliever at the next level. Says that although the change is developing into a weapon, his fastball is too hittable, mostly because of lack of downward plane. Law notoriously dislikes short pitchers though. I'm hoping Stroman turns out to be more Tim Hudson than Tom Gordon.

Its awful, going into next year we have:

XXXX
XXXX
Beurhle
Dickey
XXXX

Morrow can get a spot somewhere, but after 9 games he'll be on the DL for 10+ games, Hutchinson, Drabek, Stroman, Nolin, Happ and Rogers will fight for the other spots.

Where does AA go from here?

11th in MLB in batting average with runners on.
9th in MLB in batting average with runners in scoring position.

(Also, 6th in MLB in wRC+ with runners on, 5th in MLB in wRC+ with runners in scoring position, just to toss some sexy advanced stats goodness in there)

The bats can be better - JPA, Lawrie, Cabrera, and Bonifacio in particular - but they're not really the issue.

You had it right with starting pitching, obviously.
