Thank you!
I really dont understand all this doom and gloom from so many people in this thread.

Yes he is gonna get more than some people thought, no we cant walk away if he does but that doesnt mean he will be on the team next season.

If we cant make the cap work keeping him he will still be tradeable.

I really think nonis pulls off one more trade before training camp and all this painted into a corner talk about the salary cap space will amount to nothing.

Not at all. That's arbitration for you. He obviously doesn't expect to get $2M, but his agent has to set the bar high to maximize his client's earnings. The agent can still build a semi-credible argument in favor of $2M even if he knows it's too high. Setting the asking price at $1.5M would only help the Leafs management's argument. The $2M number could also force the Leafs to settle before arbitration.

Fraser will be the only player to go to arbitration this year. I can see it now.

That's called negotiating. They'll settle somewhere in between those two numbers. 1.35 is my guess.
1.35 is too high though. He was great as our 6th dman but when he got more minutes against better players he got exposed.

Maybe it would make more sense to put it in relation to the QO, say, you can only walk away from an awards more than 1xx% of the QO, but in the end it does kind of make sense this way too, because it is those guys with the ~1m salary who are interchnageable and need this protection. If a panel of objective judges thinks all your peers earn over 3.5m, you'll probably find another gig easily.
The QO is a formula, it has nothing to do with how the organization values you. It is your last contract minus bonuses plus a percentage that varies depending on how much your last contract was.

I was absolutely stunned at the season this guy had last year. A complete anomaly imo. He was brutal when he was with Devils...not even worthy of a #7 spot. Leafs would be crazy to give him any more than 900k

He is very good when he gets sheltered minutes with a better partner who can move the puck. That is worth 700k to 900k not a 1.3-2mil.

Because no player improves on how they played as a 22 or 23 year old.

Not to mention "brutal" is quite an overstatement. He may have not stood out but he wasn't exactly a detriment either.

Fraser is GARBAGE. I wish this guy would be buried in the minors already, pathetic. Asking for 2 MILLION? Wow

Try watching the game once in awhile. You might like the sport.

He's no Pietrangelo, but he's hardly "garbage". Fraser was a solid, steady, stay-at-home D-Man for us last year. He played a simple game and kept the puck out of our end much more than not. He lead the team in +/- and was a physical guy to boot.

He's EASILY worth 1.25-1.5 million, and he'l get it.

The Leafs offered a two way contact that's what Fraser and his agent don't want to sign. It's more about two way deal than actual money is it not?

I'd sign Fraser for 1.5M one-way in a heartbeat. He's an upgrade on our 5/6.

GMDN is trying to penny pinch in order sign all of his remaining RFA's and I really don't blame him.
Fraser is a good, physical stay at home type dman and fits well on a 3rd pairing. I would give him 1mill 1year 1 way and if he proves that he can maintain his game then give him more next year. This is assuming that Fraser is looking for 1 year deal.

Toronto gets to choose whether he gets 1 or 2 year contract in arbitration. That changes if they settle outside of arbitration, but I think this one is going all the way.

Obviously I know that.

My thinking was that you make the commitment to the player by extending the QO, so knowing it cannot exceeed that money by x% would give a better basis for the decision whether to make it or not (obviously this could be over 200%, I have not done any statistics on this, it was just a thought on making this more planable for the clubs). An arbitrary number of 3.5m for everyone doesn't have anything to do with how Fraser is valued either.

As I said though, this way makes perfect sense too.

Because now it's about discussing his arbitration hearing, which is 2 days away, and his salary demands. Would you like another Mark Fraser thread to discuss those?
