What moves will Flyers make to comply with 2013-2014 salary cap?

I was looking through CapGeek's website today and noticed the Flyers are more than $2 Million over the salary cap. I wanted to get Flyers' fans take on what moves will be made to meet the cap limit.

It's a lie.

That would certainly do the trick. Does that still leave them with one more player than the 23-man roster limit? Do they send down one of the two-way contracted forwards or trade away one of the 9 remaining Defensemen?

Marc-Andre Bourdon's NHL career might very well be over due to concussions (or so I've heard, I could be completely misinformed). Zero chance he's on the roster.

We all want to trade Meszaros for a pick anyway, but I doubt that happens.

Well it doesn't look good for MAB but he was practicing in full gear at the prospect camp a few weeks ago. I don't know if he'll ever regain his form back but I wouldn't 100% write him off just yet.

He should start the year down in the AHL & take it from there.

There are some very detailed posts somewhere breaking down the advantages of getting under the cap before the season, which would give more room to add a player later, i.e. don't depend on Pronger's LTIR off the top.

With Bourdon and Gervais, waived, we're only 600K over approx.

IF they do trade Meszaros, that would leave room to sign Gagne too.

Hartnell (4.75) - Giroux (3.75) - Voracek (4.25)
Schenn (0.90) - Lecavalier (4.50) - Simmonds (3.98)
Laughton (0.93) - Couturier (0.93) - Read (0.90)
Rinaldo (0.75) - Hall (0.60) - Talbot (1.75)
Rosehill (0.68)

Forward Total: 28.67

Timonen (6.00) - Schenn (3.60)
Streit (5.25) - Coburn (4.50)
Gustafsson (1.00) - Grossmann (3.50)
Meszaros (4.00) - Gervais (0.83)

Defense Total: 28.68

Mason (1.50)
Emery (1.65)

Goaltending Total: 03.15

Pronger (4.92)
Bartulis (0.10)
BONUSES (0.18)

Extras Total: 05.20

CAP CHARGE: 65.70
SALARY CAP: 64.30
CAP SPACE: -01.40

There is speculation that Bourdon (0.62) and Wellwood (TBD) will be carried as well because of injury, but as long as they are healthy before cap compliance day, which is what is expected at this point, then they will not be included. Wellwood and Manning are the only players tenured offers by the Flyers that have left to sign though it has been reported that Gagne and the Flyers are in agreement on a deal. That deal would send Laughton to the minors, dropping his 0.93 cap hit, and add Gagne's cap charge instead. Assuming Gagne will cost in the 2.00 range, you can pretty much assume that the Flyers need to find somewhere between 2.40 and 3.00 in space.

Trading Meszaros is the best move once he is cleared.

If he can't be traded, then moving him to the minors would only clear 0.90 in space leaving 3.10 on the books. The 0.90 savings will not be enough for the Flyers to reach cap compliance.

Buying out Meszaros would leave a 0.33 cap hit against the Flyers this year, making them cap compliant, but will carry a 1.83 cap charge next year.

Waiving Gervais and Rosehill temporarily will only save 1.51 which will be enough with Laughton in the lineup but not Gagne should he sign.

Rundblad + a 4th for Simmonds would help your cap problem slide read up to top 6.

We don't really have a cap problem as explained above & Simmonds would cost more than that. He's more apart of our plans going forward than Read is.

and make use a significantly worse team. Simmonds is worth quite a bit more than Rundbald at this stage given that Simmonds has produced at the NHL level, adds serious grit and is signed to a very affordable contract.

I like Rundblad as a prospect, but he isn't worth a Simmonds.

Ya I'm a big Simmonds fan. Rundblad unfortunately doesn't have the trade value that he might actually be worth soon.

Wait, how does that helps the Flyers? We trade a unique player who produces AND is physical for a guy who's still completely unproven to save like 1.5 mil?

That's a good thing to do if Homer takes up meth and a trash bag of the stuff is included, I guess.

Pronger can only go on LTIR after the season starts, but before the season starts the cap needs to be in compliance. So the Flyers have to do something, if only for one day, but they have options that would preclude the need to make any significant moves. After that first day, Pronger --> LTIR ------> no cap problem.

Correct me if I am wrong but the Flyers could have Schenn start in the AHL for game one...reducing his cap hi from 3+ mill to $900,000....like they did before. Is that not an option?

I think the obvious choice is to deal Mesz.

Ask capgeek. I did the other day and they said they calculate that into thier totals already, but people keep posting it on here and ignoring me when I say that, haha. Maybe they know something I don't or maybe capgeek misunderstood my question, but I'm going to go along with them.

@JerseyCursed We account for his bonuses in our totals estimates so it's a non-issue.

Yep, but it benefits them greatly not to put Pronger on LTIR and solve the cap situation by moving Meszaros.

No, because his main bonus this year is not predicated on playing in all 82 games like it was for his first two seasons.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=377385

Quote:
In the third year of Schenn's contract, he doesn't have to play the 25 minutes in all regular season games to earn a handsome $1.5 million dollar bonus, but to qualify he would have to have an All-Star season, finish among the league's point leaders and win a major award.
