Liles Buyout

Yes the Leafs can actually buyout Liles after Fraser's hearing for a period of 48 hours. It isn't a compliance buyout, just a standard one. Though the cap hit isn't too pretty, I believe the 3rd year of the cap hit is upwards of 2.3 million. If the Leafs were to exercise this option it would leave around 3 million extra in their pockets for this season, and more than enough to sign Franson. As for Franson though, he didn't file for arbitration, and that leaves the Leafs completely in the drivers seat. He will end up accepting what they want to pay him, and take a bridge deal.

The Leafs have a 48 hour window during which they can buyout any eligible player after Fraser's arbitration is resolved.

Eligibility requirements are from CBA 11.18:
- Teams are limited to 3 total buyouts in the 2nd buyout window following arbitration over the lifetime of the new 2013 CBA.
- Player to be bought out must have a salary cap hit of at least $2.75m. This amount increases year to year by the same % that average player salary increases.
- Player must have been on the team's roster as of the most recent trade deadline.

More like lousy cap management. It's almost unbelievable what sort of teams Boston, Chicago, etc, can keep under the cap. We're no where near that level and having cap issues already.

So whats the problem in ditching Fraser and keeping franson and liles?
That should be enough for them to sign franson and kadri..

Are they effed because of tendering a qualifying offer on Fraser?

Yep, they have to accept the offer unless it's over 3.5 million which it obviously won't be.

Also, does anyone know what time the hearing is at today?

#Leafs and Mark Fraser meeting this morning ahead of arbitration hearing to try and get a deal. Doesn't sound hopeful though

He will be awarded ~$1.5m. What are everyone else's guesses?

He'll be awarded ~1.0 - 1.3m for one year, and if he is great in the #6 role again, he'll be signed to a 4 or 5 year deal next summer IMO.

is he that much better than Pardy, Schultz, Hannan?

they all got under 1 million

that Harrison contract is probably what is complicating things ...Rutherford!

Fraser should get around 1 million

I wonder if the Leafs signing Ranger to 1 million will actually be used against them in the arbitration. That guy hasn't played at the NHL level in what, 3 years?

I would think Fraser uses it, and as such gets 1.5

Fraser really can't compare himself to Ranger, who has a solid body of work in the NHL, regardless of the number of years since he last played for Tampa.

Terrible comparable IMO and the arbitrator will throw that out if Fraser's camp uses it.

LOL. Chicago lost Neimi for NOTHING because of cap problems. And they had to ditch Vertseeg and Bolland for mediocre picks/prospects. And the Bruins just lost Horton & Ference because they couldn't afford to keep them. All teams have to play tetris with their cap/rosters.

Toronto has a VERY nice core locked up now, long-term(once Kessel is re-signed, our top-6 will be set for years....). When another team does that, it's called "smart, forward thinking". When Toronto does it, it's "lousy cap management".

We have no cap troubles looming. The cap is VERY LIKELY going up by 6 million next year, we will have an extra 2.5 million from buyouts/Bernier trade, and a roster move here or there, and we're FINE.

Gawd, the dramatics.
