ok well im saying this as a hockey fan and not a Habs fan but, wasnt this signing not the priority? Nonis should have dealt with Kadri and or Franson first and that, if enough space, go with Fraser. Not that you guys needed Fraser with already 7 d-men on the roster plus a somewhat good chance that Rielly makes the club this year.

Fraser is a good bottom pairing dmen who brings depth to the team but right now, it takes away salary from Franson and Kadri who'll want that piece of the pie.

Some are saying, easy, just trade Liles but not many are gonna job on that contract unless TML give a little extra like a pick. Only 5 teams have more than 10M. They other ones might not want to spend $3,875M on Liles.

anyways, my opinion that`s all. Alot of blaming the Clarkson signing for the cap restriction that they're having. I get the signing, you always have to overpay come free agency day but I just dont get why Nonis is signing Fraser and a guy like Ranger 1 way deals when he knows hes got less than 5m and 2 big RFAs to sign who, in my opinion will go for more than 2.5M each.

My question is, since Reilly`s contract counts for 1,744M against the cap, means that if they want to keep him up with the big club, they'll have to shed more salary?
850k of Reilly's contract is performance bonuses which he may not earn. If he does earn them, whatever bonus money doesn't fit into this year's cap can be rolled over into next year's cap.

But arbitration has to actually move forward does it not... they signed him before it so I do no think they get another window...

Nope. The language in the CBA strictly says file and not reach.

If Franson and Kadri are signed, and Smith and Holzer are sent down, that leaves you with a 20 man roster, 12 forwards, 6 dmen and 2 goalies. Most teams go into the season with 22 or 23 players in case of injuries.

I believe they just have to file for it, which Fraser and Gunnarsson did.

Guess he finally got his payday (relatively speaking, of course. I'd say this is probably as much as he'll make as a #5 or #6).

Fraser filed for arbitration, so I believe the second buyout window opens for Toronto regardless.

Not really a requirement and it won't hamper the Leafs to go into the season with less than 22/23 players.

That's what I thought too.

Yeah, there is a buyout window, I believe itís after the final arbitration date. There is an arbitration window that opens up, but itís not a compliance window. For instance, if you were to get hit with an arbitration settlement that doesnít fit into your numbers, you do have the right to exercise a buyout of whomever you would chose to on your team at that point. Not the player that you signed, or that you get the arbitration hearing on, itís anybody else on the team that can be bought out.
I do hope I am misinterpreting it though. Would love to keep Franson.

It only takes 1 player elected arbitration settlement/judgement to open the 2nd window. Teams are only allowed to use 3 of these 2nd window buyouts over the duration of the CBA though.

Hoping the best for him. That injury was pretty bad, wishing him a full recovery; he played some good hockey for the Leafs.

Yup, he did. But he's 100% healthy and has been training for awhile now.

I think this is writing on the wall for Franson. They HAVE to sign him now. All of there defensemen they have signed are left handed shots. (Phanuef, Gunnarsson, Fraser, Gardiner, Rielly, Ranger)

Glad to see Fraser is returning. Is snarl is needed in front of our crease.

It also ensure Reilly is going to be in the WHL this year and not be rushed. Hopefully he can put up a PPG in MJ and then get shifted to the Marlies again for more seasoning.

With Ranger and Fraser only having 1 year deals, there's space available next year if he's ready to take it.

I'm surprised TOR decided to sign him. It's no surprise that Tor played better and almost beat the Bruins after Fraser went down with a broken face.

That was because Jake Gardiner was given a greater role, not because Mark Fraser wasn't in the lineup. Gardiner was an absolute beast when he was given added responsibility.

That is kind of like saying the Habs didn't have their priorities straight last year, as PK wasn't the first off season signing. The arbitration hearing was today, they either had to make a deal today, or accept whatever the hearing stated. It was the right thing to do in this case.

Do they still have that buyout window if they settled before arbitration??

Yes. Two players just have to file for arbitration, not reach it.

Who would take Liles at this point? Colorado has the worst defense in the league and wouldn't even touch his contract.

Toronto didn't have a chance. They couldn't walk away from the arbitration award if it got to that point.
