Except that Staal is 24 and probably entering the prime of his career while Pavelski may be on the decline. Also, Staal is better defensively than Pavelski.

Seems more likely that Dan Boyle doesn't come back; or at the very least won't have the substantial cap hit he currently does.

Anyone who thinks this'll affect Thornton or Marleau: Boyle is coming off the books in the offseason too, and he's the one taking the most likely paycut.

Also, if we really need the space we can amnesty Havlat, provided he's not hurt again by then.

Kind of expensive for a #3 Centre, no?

The right price at the very moment and 5 years is good lenght. His last season will be as a 33 yr old so i doubt he declines that much.

EDIT: 34

Core player for the Sharks. Glad they locked him up.

I fail to see how Staal is worst offensively by looking at their stats over the last 3 years

Pavelski : 158 pts in 204 games 0.77 pts per game
Staal : 111 pts in 152 games 0.73 pts per game

The difference is very marginal...

I'm beyond happy right now. I was getting seriously worried we'd lose him.

I'm sure there's a full NMC in there too.

Pavelski is an excellent two-way player who is likely to have a few more 30 goal seasons and produces in the playoffs. He also is a leader on the team. Solid deal.

Very good signing. Looking at how much Clowe and Clarkson got, this is a solid deal for the Sharks; it isn't going to hinder their ability to stay under the cap yet remain competitive.

Anyone who thinks this is overpayment is being silly. A great defensive center that puts up at least 60 points a year while winning every faceoff ever. Ryane Clowe has been hideous the last 2 years and just got a similar contract.

Looking at the recent contracts, that's what I'm thinking about. Why did we have (yet) another lockout?
