Money where my mouth is here. Since this seems to be the only aspect that has not been touched on for this 'impending disaster'. Who do the Leafs go after with the extra money? Who fills the voids?

Is it the Sedins? One of Joe or Marleau in San Jose? There are many names who have not been extended yet so who do we grab?

Girardi
Pitkanen

Callahan
Vanek
Thornton
Marleau
Pominville
Downie
Sedins

Are the guys I have any interest in. Prefer Phaneuf to either defensemen and Kessel to any forward there though. In a perfect world we add Girardi and maybe Thornton/Marleau to what we have.

Myself as well, but again, I figured its the only thing (in the 5-6 plus threads) that hasn't really been touched on.

Personally, I'd take a run at Vanek or Marleau.

None of the d excite me

Girardi would be a prime target. Top pairing defence-first RHD without injury history...

He'd pair very well with either of Rielly or Gardiner. Really solidify the top 4 defensively.

I don't think he'd replace what Phaneuf actually brings, but if either Gardiner or Rielly comes as advertised, could be really impressive.

If we let Phaneuf walk I'd hope to go after Thornton. Maybe just don't resign Kulemin.

JVR - Thornton - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson
McClement - Bozak - Bolland
McLaren - Colborne - Orr

Gardiner - Gunnarsson
Rielly - Ranger
Fraser - Franson

Reimer/Bernier

That's a nasty looking top 9 but I'd be afraid we'd have to outgun our opponents every single night 5-4

If they walk, that kills anybody wanting to join us. People would want to play with these guys, not guys like Gunnarsson or Bozak(no disrespect to either of them)

On the surface I agree, but it is August, and Kessel and Nonis haven't even talked extension yet right?

Disappointing thread from the OP.

These are the types of threads you come back and look at 5 years down the road and laugh.

That would be very stupid, teams blow it up when their window has closed.

Hell No, not the sedins. Not those aging sharks either. Vanek, Stastny, Seidenberg, Pominville, Bouwmeester maybe Niskanen? As of right now the 2014 UFA list is looking pretty good, but i doubt the big name guys stay ufa that long.

We'll extend Kessel and Dion, hopefully we'll have enough money to sign Bouwmeester.

Phaneuf - Bouwmeester

Didn't this idea fail miserably in Calgary?

Yes, this is the situation where you would blow it up. I doubt it'll actually happen, though.

OK, I'll bite.

Vanek is the only forward on that list that could somewhat replace Phil. I like Girardi but he doesn't hold a candle to Phaneuf.
