Defensive depth. He'll play in the AHL barring a nasty string of injuries, but it's very nice to have guys like him around. Great AHL player that can do ok filling in if a need arises.

Career AHL-type, but a great guy to have for Milwaukee and in an emergency situation.

Habs fan who comes in peace...

How would something around David Desharnais, Davis Drewiske and a prospect like Patrick Holland for Nick Spaling and Ryan Ellis work?

Ellis is stuck behind right handed guys like Weber, Klein and now Jones. You guys also seem to have a lot of grinder type guys with Clune, Gaustad, Hendricks, Nystrom and Stalberg so Spaling can be available.

DD, although he had a bad season, excels with bigger guys. Put him with any of Wilson, Beck, Legwand or Stalberg and he can have a good year again.

Spaling would give Montréal a fairly gritty 3rd liner and Ellis would give us a Young right handed D. Maybe a powerplay quarterback to replace Markov.

Value is good...I'm just weary of Desharnais. We have an abundance of 2nd-3rd line centers right now.

Value is fine, but the last thing we need is another tweener center. Literally, the last thing.

I probably wouldn't do it. Desharnais would bring some much needed skill, but he physically goes against the mold of the rest of the team. Though a lot are willing to give up on Ellis at this point, I still think it's too early to be shipping him out. We also aren't really in a spot to be taking on much more salary.

Understandable...

I figured the lines can be something like:

Colin Wilson - Mike Fisher - Patric Hornqvist
Matt Cullen - David Legwand - Filip Forsberg
Viktor Stalberg - David Desharnais - Craig Smith
Eric Nystrom - Paul Gaustad - Taylor Beck
- Gabriel Bourque and Matt Hendricks

Roman Josi - Shea Weber
Victor Bartley - Kevin Klein
Davis Drewiske - Seth Jones
- Mattias Ekholm

Wilson and Cullen are natural centres though so I understand why you wouldnt want another centre. Although I think DD would inject some much needed skill in the roster.

Why does everyone sell Bourque so short. He was one of our best forwards last season, including Erat.

Agreed. I think Bourque could be a legit 2nd line winger as soon as next year.

I'd probably do it. Desharnais gives us some flexibility with the forward crops and maybe some leverage with Fisher and Legwand's contract coming up.

I think very little of Ellis and his ability to play anything more than a niche role in the NHL and Spaling is redundant 5 times over here.

Although to be honest, I think if we package those two off, we could probably get something that fills a bit more of a need for us.

No offense to anyone but it's getting ridiculous how many people sell Stalberg and Bourque short.

Stalberg was a career 3rd liner thanks to the abundance of superstars in CHI, but he's a definite 1/2 line guy here. Now obviously time and his pay will prove it and I could be wrong but I'm no way do I expect him to be lower than the 2nd line with respect to the rolling lines.

Bourque>Beck
Stalberg>everyone minus Wilson and Horns IMO.

I expect to be called crazy and say I'm over hyping him cuz I know he hasn't played a day here yet but his ceiling is high and he could reach it here.

I dont think its much of a trade... we send a center and a defenseman we dont need for a center and a defenseman we dont need

as someone said above, we'd be better off packaging Ellis and Spaling +/- Smith for either a true top 6 winger or else some picks +/- a good forward prospect

He plays aggressive but more of a speed aggressive game.

Some are putting Smith and Beck ahead of him and I just don't see it, neither are as good at hockey as Bourque.

I'm not sipping the Stalberg Kool-aid quite yet. He was scratched for Chicago. That said, I can't wait to see what he can do with top 6 minutes. I am not crowning him a savior just yet, but I do think he will be an awesome pickup.

Yeah I'm no trying to say he's the savior or anything but I mean he's a better pickup than people are alluding to. I'm just trying to say NSH and CHI are totally different places and he will see very good minutes here giving him every opportunity to be the go to
