For 5.6 million a year maybe he'll finally crack 20 goals in a season

He's already done that once before and this year he had 19 goals in 48 games.

This is a great signing for the Jets. Wheeler is a great player and Jets locked him up for his prime years. Great job!

only in toronto but there called buyouts

I'd put his over/under this season at 30 goals, then you'd say I'm crazy, then I'd say I don't care.

Given that he scored 19 in 48 last year, this is an extremely tenuous argument against the contract.

IMHO he would have gotten the same amount as a UFA, which makes this deal a little expensive and risky if you take into consideration that its a re-sign. would have understood the 3 years/ 5.6 m per ... but 6 ? they must be really confident that he's going to put on his try pants and carry for a long time.

The money is decent but not for the term. At 6 years, they should have gotten a discount, but I don;t think they did.

Similar to the Bogo signing, it's not awful, but it's not great either IMO.

Crazy deal. Winnipeg is locking up the core though.

This is my thought as well. We definitely paid more than what some other teams can get players to accept. At least the deals made sense for our team. In 4 years the cap might be $10-12M higher and we'll ideally have a couple guys on ELCs and a few more on bridge deals.

If any of the players flop we're in big trouble but long term this gives the Jets some stability that they can build around.

It's time to change Blake Wheeler's name to "Top 15 NHL RW Blake Wheeler".

I'd say so. No one seems to know what type of player he is.

I can't tell if you're supporting what's been repeated ad nauseum or making fun of it.

Which is about a 32-goal pace in a full season, unless I totally fail at math. Along with a 70 point pace.

Leading scorer for that franchise ever since they moved from Atlanta to WPG. He'll be worth it eventually. Big powerforward.

At the gym the other day a guy said, 'On another team he'd be a 3rd liner.' And then, 'He's only getting the points because he's getting the ice-time.'

His average ice-time last year was 18:48. Nothing exceptional. And how come he out-produced 15 other 1st-line RW's also getting 'ice-time'?

I was left speechless; didn't know where to start at the moment.

Stupid people have opinions too.

How many words per day people are allowed to speak should depend on their IQ.

The Jets are a team that had no depth at forward. There were no prospects in St. Johns that could provide some scoring. The only offense for the Jets has been that provided by Little, Kane, Ladd, and Wheeler. If they didn't score, the Jets didn't win. Winnipeg is unable to compete for UFA's that can provide scoring. To develop as a team, the Jets must wait for their draftpicks to develop. After 3 drafts, the first 2 prospects are now challenging for positions. Mark Scheifele at Centre and Trouba on D. They are both expected to win spots but may not. If they take spots, they may not be big contibutors for a season or two. It was essential for Chevy to lock up our 3 top RFA forwards to long term contacts in order for our draft picks to develop. The contracts they got were what was needed to keep them long term. I really wasn't sure that they would all sign and losing any of them would have been a huge setback. The contracts may have been slightly higher than some had expected but that is what it took to keep them in Winnipeg. Management is respectful of their players and treats them well and in return, they have shown loyalty to the Jets organization and their teammates. They have all indicated that they feel the Jets are on the right path and have stated that they want to remain with the team and build something special. Everyone is happy with these deals. The players are happy, management is happy, and the Jets' fans are happy. What more needs to said.

Once Winnipeg gets a real centre, people will see the potential of Wheeler come out. He has all the tools to be a 65+ pt power forward.
