Fact is, if the kid plays well in Traverse, he'll be signed. If he doesn't, then he'll indicate he's not worth a contract and won't be. If there's no threat from Carolina signing him now, then there's really no rush to sign him now.

My money is on a solid tournament from the kid.

So this kid is coming to Traverse City with the Rangers?

Lets hope he likes the guys he's playing with and wants to stay with the Org.

I'm as big a proponent as there is of getting a bit bigger and nastier to play against, but we do need skill and this kid is pretty skilled.

I'm hoping they don't waste any time and just sign him. He is worthy of a contract.

even though hes really talented and gifted with great hands, awesome dangleness, and a terrific, fearless work ethic, the deck is stacked against him.

hes tiny. and that is a tough thing to over come in this nhl.

if any of you watched any ssm games last season at all, you couldnt help but notice the kid who's got the size of a bantam player but plays like an nhl'er.

having said all that, offer the kid a contract and roll the dice.

With the signing of Donnay does the chances of Tolchinsky being signed diminish? I know if he gets signed he'll slide as well, but still curious.

Edit: Also does anyone know if Traverse will be televised this year?

Has nothing to do with him being a superstar. It has everything to do with getting a skilled player who is raw and undeveloped physically, into the organization for nothing but cash and a contract (which will slide as he is returning back to Juniors).

The question then becomes do we think he can actually put on a significant amount of muscle and weight on his slight frame without losing any skating prowess. It's been reported (? at least I saw ODC say it) that he has trouble keeping on weight.

If he was a stocky player he'd probably have ten fold better chance of making the NHL.

Of course, but if he was stocky, he would have been drafted. Take the chance. He has the skill and the hockey IQ and he has a high end motor.

hes a small guy

see, this 4th grader is under 5' and sergeys alot smaller than she is so im thinking his height numbers are being fudged big time.

He is 18 years old. He could very well put on another inch or two and another 20-30 lbs.
Size didn't seem to effect him in scoring those goals. He has good speed and you can't hit what you can't catch.

He is an interesting prospect and worth a contract. Low risk, high reward. No one is expecting the guy to be a savior, but if he can even make an AHL impact at the very least, then it is a success.

Oh, come on - he's clearly sitting down in that pic.

(Still, it demonstrates how slight he is in comparison to the 5th grader...)

I know it's summer and I know as far concerning hockey news it's definitely slow, but for discussion purposes I am going to post the following:

I know much has been made about Tolchinsky's size and for good reason, he's small, but the kid is definitely very gifted and talented. Maybe some of you will remember this great Russian player, maybe the best Russian player of all time. Valery Kharlamov. Well there is something that he and Tolchinsky have in common. They are both the same size. 5'8" - 165 lbs and great skill. I am not comparing Kharlamov's career with Tolchinsky, an unproven small player, just their size and to say that some good things do come in small packages. They both have similar skating strides and are great puck handlers.
I know that was a different era and the NHL is a much bigger league now but give the small kid a chance. And for all you naysayers out there, if the NYR like Tolchinsky after the Traverse City Tounament and Carolina doesn't sign him before hand, I say sign the kid. You never know.

If you were the Rangers, they'd have to up the contract limit by about 200.

Because I want to sign a skilled undrafted player? Not seeing the risk.

I'm sorry, but he's not the same size as Valery Kharlamov. He may be listed as the same size, but he's not that big.
