Prospects??

Trying to increase my knowledge - and you all seem so full of it
What happens to a prospect like say Ben Marshall in 2010 that was drafted, but still has no contract? Is this unusual, or will someone pick him up if he doesnt get a contract by 2015?

No, it's not unusual.

Normal thing with NCAA players. Can't play in NCAA with pro contract. And he probably wouldn't crack Griffins lineup and with so many D prospects already there, it's better for his and other prospects development that he plays in college.

That said, as an undersized Dman, his production should increase by fair amount for him to get contract imo.

He becomes UFA if we don't sign him after his full 4 years at NCAA.

I think think after 2015, he goes for some European league.

With the Red Wings, they ALWAYS sign their top collegiate prospects after their third year in the NCAA. So a lot will depend on how Marshall does this season. He's all offense so if he has a very strong season for Minnesota there's a shot Detroit would sign him. Up to this point that doesn't seem likely IMO.

If that doesn't happen he'll likely play all four years and then he'd become a free agent. There are guys who develop into NHL talents 4 years after being drafted but they tend to be guys who get drafted in the early rounds, like Justin Schultz and Blake Wheeler.
