Let me see if anyone can read this and not freak out about context and whatever.
Last year I went to Portugal for 2 weeks and then spent another week in Spain. I brought a cell phone purchased in Portugal a few years ago with capability for multiple sim cards, as well as a sim card for a European telecom company (Vobis I believe).

When I arrived, the pre-paid service had 20 Euros to use. After 3 weeks, and calls throughout Portugal and Spain, calls back to Toronto, etc, I had a total of 16 Euros left on the card.

So, in 3 weeks, with multiple international calls made and received (all wireless services have free incoming calls in Portugal by default), I spent 4 Euros - about $6 Canadian. And, if I had never made another call since, or added any money to the sim card, it would still, today, have the same 16 Euros left.

If you have a pre-paid service here in Canada, every month you must add to the available balance or lose the current balance. There is no carry-over, something that is baseline on the other side of the world, in a place where the economy has collapsed, started to rebuild and collapsed again.

I pay $450 to Rogers each month for regular internet, basic cable and 2 cell phone lines using a shared 1Gb data package and 1000 minutes. This would cost, back in Europe, something like 50 - 75 Euros.

And I can't seem to get a signal, much less 3G, at Sheppard and Yonge....you know, in the middle of the wilderness.
Then again, the argument that Canada is the world's 2nd largest country and therefore the telecom companies need so many towers, etc, doesn't hold any water when you look at the coverage maps. There is practically no service 300 km north of the border with the US, and 90% of the country's population is located within 200 miles of the border. It's not like there are thousands of towers located out in the middle of Nunuvut, northern Ontario, northern Quebec, etc.

Tell you one thing. If Bell and Rogers want to cry about having it so bad when the government allows other companies to come in and use the available infrastructure, then maybe they should be less concerned with purchasing all the Toronto sports franchises, sponsoring sports arenas all over the country for naming rights, and maybe focus on keeping their customers happy.

Maybe, just maybe, happy current customers wouldn't flip them the bird the moment they're free of them. As it stands, many people will switch to Verizon, a company basically the same as Bell and Rogers, just much bigger, completely out of spite.

And then we're forced to listen the blatant lies that they are spewing on the radio about how Canada has some of the world's lowest wireless and data rates. It's honestly like having a guy stand on your roof, pissing on you and trying to convince you that it's raining.

Rogers and Bell don't do **** for me in Sask, so I have very little sympathy for them here. Outside of Regina and Saskatoon, Rogers' coverage is terrible. Bell doesn't even have any towers here, they just piggyback off SaskTel.

The new prices are a joke. 6 gb at Telus are now around 120+ a month .

Oligopoly is the actual term. Neely got all upset cause I used the wrong terminology.

First year Microeconomics failed me. Or I failed it... I can't remember.

smaller slice out of a vastly bigger pie. Not a good thing.

Agreed. This is a sober and well-thought out move that could mean the survival and prosperity of the BBRY brand.

It doesn't look good but yeah, media are taking the part where selling is an option and saying it's the most likely option, etc.

The thing is this is exactly what stated a year ago...I don't see a difference other then the possibility of going private which was not mentioned a year ago. The same financial firms were hired a year ago to look into "strategic" options for RIM at the time.

I guess we shall see what happens in the coming weeks and months.

It is what it is, a desperation move. It hardly means that they are going to survive or prosper. The company desperately needs a new business model, they simply cant survive with their own OS. Their name and knowledge (at least their employees and I imagine patents) still have a lot of value, but I have to think that whatever entity survives will be nothing like the BB of current or old.

A lot of companies get major investors. Apple did in 1997 when it got a major influx of cash from Microsoft. Sometimes companies are able to change their fortunes with a recapitalization or a restructuring.

I have now been using an iPhone 5 for nearly a month, and while some of the features are nice, I just keep wanting my Z10 back. It has everything to do with the OS and the OS features for me.

The native email programme is ten times better, the OS actually allows for proper multi-tasking, the HUB allows for an easy way to organize your email, texts, BBM's and social media messages. Also, the keyboard on the Z10 is still the best around.

Also, I still can't tell why the iPhone doesn't come with a word processing app. That comes standard with the Z10.

That said, the screen and external speakers on the iPhone are pretty slick. Second to none. The sound volume and speakers were better too.
