Vancouver belongs in the next tier down. And you know who they're there with? The Blue Jackets, of all teams.

There are some teams that have better defensemen than the Rangers, so in that aspect maybe they aren't "elite" but there are VERY FEW teams that have a better defense as a group than the Rangers, therefore making them an elite defense

I guess that depends on your definition of elite. Is a top 5 defense elite? I haven't seen any outlandish comments like 'easily the best in the NHL' or 'one of the greatest D's of all time.' I think most people here are confident with the defense on this club. A true PP QB is def lacking, but outside of that....

This team has plenty of issues. Goaltending and defense are not my concerns...

His definition of elite is based on an abstract ideal, which transcends current circumstance. It certainly is one way of looking at it. I just don't agree with it. Being elite is defined by your contemporaries.

I believe it centers around the use or mis-use of the word "elite" when describing our defense.

I suggest you either rethink how you use the word elite here. There are really no elite defensemen in the league at all with the possible exception of Chara and he was exposed terribly by the Black Hawks speed in the SCF.

McDonagh and Staal are not even top 10 defensemen in a league that is devoid of so called "elite" defensemen!
McDonagh Staal and Girardi are all elite defensively, and they all put up good points for defensemen. If are D-core isn't already Top 5 in the league, they soon will be. What other team has a terrific defense who's average age is 25? Pittsburgh having Letang doesn't make their entire defense elite, their defense is ****ing awful.

What kind of definition do you have of elite where there is only one player in the entire league who is? Being "Elite" is relative to other contemporary players, not Scott Stevens, or whatever HOF'er from a totally different era.

If Staal comes back near 100%, and Del Zotto can get back to his top form which he showed at times this year, watch out.

I don't know that I would say the Kings have a better defense than us either. Doughty, Voynov, Muzzin are very good, but I don't know about the rest.. With a healthy Staal, the Rangers defense overall is better IMO

Del Zotto is not better than Yandle who is another vastly underrated defenseman in the league.

speaking of defensemen, next year on the PP how about A DZ-Stralman pairing at the back end with Stralman being the triggerman? Probably has the most accurate slap shot on the team, and he can pass too.

Could make for an interesting LH-RH combination, which I think you need on the PP.

When Del Zotto doesn't play with his head up his ass, we're arguably the best defense in the Conference. He brings offense and physicality that round out the Top 4 perfectly.

I definitely want Stralman on the PP. He's a no BS player.

Muzzin better than Staal? He looks like a gem but right now I'd definitely take Staal over him.

Meh. If you were to rank the top 4 defensemen in each group together, you'd come up with:

Doughty
McDonagh
Staal
Girardi
Voynov
Muzzin
Del Zotto
Regehr

and

Chara
McDonagh
Staal
Girardi
Boychuk
Seidenberg
Del Zotto
McQuaid

X-factors involve Krug and Hamilton for Boston and Martinez for LA.

I said defensive player. And if anything, Yandle is overrated. He's terribly poor in his own end.

Muzzin is a bottom pairing guy at this point. I don't know why you guys are taking him. Mitchell has to stay healthy next year for the Kings' defense to stay strong. Him and Regher are vital to that team. Regher is a great partner for Doughty.

Losing Scuderi hurts them a lot. Their PK will likely drop a few points next year.

I forgot that they don't have Scuderi anymore. That's going to bite them, definitely.

Wrong; the bottom 3 on LA are easily better than our bottom 3!
