The Oilers honestly could've gotten both Robataille and Carson for him at the time, they should've pushed it.

Could've have gotten Yzerman + from Detroit easily too. Virtually they could have had any player with maybe the exception of Lemieux at that time.

3 Team Deal:

NJ gets Wayne Gretzky

St. Louis gets Stefan Matteau & Mark Fayne

EDM gets Jaroslav Halak, Michael Ryder and NJ 2nd rounder (since they have to forfeit their 1st this year, of course)

people forget just how much Wayne Gretzky dominated the scoring titles. There was rarely anyone in sight of his league lead and if there was, there werent many. Unlike today where races are a bit tighter.

Crosby I think had it sealed before his injury. He was on pace for 2 points per game I believe

There have been more than a few trades of very high end players over the years and it's NEVER the crazy"asking prices" of fans on here.
But you are mistaking him for a mere mortal player... Gretz (and Lemieux) could make pylons scoring machines... it would not matter if you traded a whole first line for him since you could just stick one decent scorer one plugger with him and he would still get 160+ points.

The key to winning then would be insane depth down the rest of the lineup...

So let us turn back to the OP question... say EDM has Gretzky... I think CHI could do the following...

Toews ($6.3M) + Kane ($6.3M) + Oduya ($3.3M cap dump) + 3 1sts for Gretzky ($12.8M) and Hemsky (50% retained/$2.5M)

(total $15.3M for $15.9M)

And it would not really hurt them...

Bickell (60 pts)-Gretzky (160+ pts)-Hossa (110+ pts)
Sharp-Pirri-Hemsky
Saad-Shaw-Morin
Bollig-Kruger-Smith
Handzus

I guess another discussion would be "what would/should the Oilers have received for him at the time were they not looking for cash in return?"

As was pointed out, they should've received Robitaille too, even with the cash. Carson was one of the best young players to ever come along as well, and still has the record for most goals scored by a teenager. I wonder if Lemieux straight up actually would have worked had money been no issue?

It would be really interesting to see how many points Gretzky would put up in today's NHL. I think it's hard to judge his value without seeing how he compares with today's elite players like Crosby and Malkin.

The answer. Probably a whole lot less. Better and bigger goalies primarily.

When Gretzky was traded to LA, he received a paycheck that blew the minds of people and players alike. Players who were nothing like Gretzky, knew because of his contract they could up the paychecks of theirs too.

Owners got pissed at LA for doing this but LA stated that players can beg all they want for money, no player attracts as much attention and fans as Gretzky does... and it was true.

Gretzky cleared the path of stats unlike anyone today. I highly doubt that Gretzky even at the decline of his points would go for anything of the sort you guys are mentioning.

2 first rounders and another later pick and a 2nd line player?
All 30 teams will try their best to go after the guy if made available.

The Rangers today would have to give up a 2nd round pick, a 3rd round pick, Derek Stepan, John Moore.

Or like Derek Brassard, 1st round pick, John Moore

Knowing Glen Sather though, he probably could trade to get Gretzky for a napkin, lotion and some tweezers with the trades hes made in recent years.

Especially with their relationship lol

If Wayne Gretzky was a free agent. He would offer him max contract. and a mansion to come play. And wait until hes 35...

I suspect he would be worse than Crosby.

I know that is sacrilege but i think its true.

There is only a couple of teams that would be able to pull off a trade for him without it doing more harm than good...Like the Blues could offer something like Petro, Backes/Oshie, Schwartz, and couple firsts but does that get it done? It's such a tough deal to do without gutting your team...A team like Pitt could offer Crosby/Malkin, Letang and first or something and they should still be contenders.

Watching Kings Ransom,

The Oilers were expected to rob LA in the deal.

When Gretzky finally accepted terms with leaving, he told LA that they were losing too much. And so he made sure LA kept key pieces and got some in return to get a more balanced deal so they would be competitive

He would for sure be scoring less but he would still be the best player in the game and rack up all the hardware like he did. I think he would still be the undisputed number one player in the game and I imagine the difference between him and the 2nd best player would be the same as it was.

Crosby is definetly the best player in the game today but is their anything that he does better than what Gretzky did?

At the same time, getting Gretzky meant McNall could hob knob with Kevin Costner and Goldie Hawn at parties and sell out the building every night. McNall said it himself, that deal changed his life in terms of his status in the LA social scene.

The Oilers could've asked for the entire roster really or said "screw it we'll trade him to Detroit for that Yzerman kid". Gretzky initially wanted Detroit, not LA.

Have to be Hemmer, Sammy, Potter, Smid and 2014 1st. I mean really Kurri makes Gretzky what he is.
