I think the Raptors are actually a relatively successful franchise off the court. Compared to the bottom-feeders of the league at least.

People seem to think that if Gretzky was put into today's game he wouldn't train in the gym or take advantage of all the advancements in supplements and diet. Or benefit from better gear.

It's all "You saw him back then, he's weak and frail."

CBJ could offer what Edmonton needs without gutting their team.

Defense: Murray or Erixon & Wiz (your going to get salary back)
Bottom Six Wingers: Jenner or Johansen & Dubi or RJ (more salary)
Pick: And 2014 1st

Helps both teams

My main argument has always been the extreme improvement in goaltending. No doubt, if groomed in the way athletes are today he would be elite. But goalies have this thing called the butterfly now and equipment twice the size. He'd probably put up points, but nobody is scoring at the pace he did ever again.

Wayne Gretzky at the time was likely more popular than every NHL player combined today.

He was the only player many Americans had ever heard of, even to this day a lot of people in the US can't name a hockey player other than Gretzky (or as hilariously put in that 30 for 30 documentary by a LA casual fan "that Wayne guy").

1 for 1 Gretzky would easily get you any player in today's NHL IMO.

I think younger fans have a hard time fathoming just how much Gretzky dominated the game when he was in his prime.

I think there's no way in hell Gretzky gets traded in the cap era during his prime. He wasn't really traded to begin with, he was sold and players were given to make it look like a trade.

Gretzky like Crosby would never get traded until the prime years are behind him in the modern cap era. There would be no incentive whatsoever for it to happen unless the player demands a trade or something.

The package would be so big and so unrealistic that no team would ever be actually capable of doing it even if they somehow wanted to. Gretzky even in the 80s was worth pretty much an entire roster in return and it still wouldn't be enough.

True, I was only 5 years old in 1980 but I would take Mario over Gretzky any day of the week. Gretzky put up a lot of points (and that wins games/cups) but I don't worship him like some of you older folks do.

And some of these proposals are not even realistic. No team is going to give up 5 players and 4 first round picks for him. Even if he is worth that.

You must really want Tampa to suck...

This reminds me of the year I drafted Carson as a sleeper pick, only have him score 1 total point and then disappear for the rest of his life...

It was never pure points that mattered... it was Gretzky's percentage of scoring over 2nd place that was the true telling of his skills...

1981- 18% more points than #2 scorer in the NHL
1982- 31% more points than #2
1983- 37% more
1984- 39%
1985- 35%
1986- 35%
1987- 41%
1990- 13%

So if we do that exercise today...

2006- 147 pts
2007- 157 pts
2008- 153 pts
2009- 157 pts
2010- 151 pts
2011- 140 pts
2012- 153 pts
2013- 68 pts (8 pts up on 2nd place)

We are looking at a 30-40% drop per year... I think we would all agree that is pretty close to the scoring difference between 80s and today... still though Gretzky would win 8X Art Ross... does not diminish his overall greatness... he would be that good in any era

I'd go for...

A Parise/Suter contract, assuming he's FA.

4+ firsts, Zbad, Anderson, Cowen, Spezza.

Bag of pucks, and goal paint.

One hundred million dollars.

Maybe, to sweeten the pot, Eric Condra?

Or a similar deal to Jumbo Joe...

first line forward OR can't-miss elite prospect
first pairing defenseman OR starting goalie
depending on who those players are, two to three consecutive first round picks. maybe even four.

Crosby + Malkin + Letang + Neal, even that's not enough.

Same as it did then.
A younger star centre on a friendlier contract, a recent 1st rounder/team's best prospect and three future 1st rounders. Given that it's the cap era, instead of the 15 million cash, probably involve the team taking on an onerous contract.
