He was American in the fact that he lived in New York. But he was born in the DR and didn't speak a lick of English at the time.

Whatever, bullpen sucks. Season sucks. Don't care. At least we get Utley on reasonable terms for another two years.

Yeah you're right. I believe it happened a few years later after that but the team was American & forged a couple of players AAU cards or whatever it is for that league.

Now that's the Phillies team I remember growing up with. All this contending/making the playoffs every year was something I had no experience with other than 1993 lol.

The report for utley is 2 years 27 mil with a vesting option for 3rd. I don't know how people could be unhappy with that. It's obvious that for whatever reason, utley wants to stay here.

Chase Utley needs to retire having only played for the Phillies.

Probably the best jersey I've ever owned too (Utley) .

Good. We love Utley, he loves us.

Also, Phils claimed Kaspar[?] Wells off waivers from the A's I believe. Corresponding roster move to be made for the weekend series against Washington.

Great news. Even though I'm a hockey fan first and foremost, Utley is probably my favorite pro athlete of all time. Hope he retires a Philly.

What's really sad is the Phils will basically be paying Utley over the next two yrs what Howard gets in one.

Phils claimed Casper Wells (.167 AVG, .225 OBP) from the White Sox.

Start planning that parade.

This will be Wells' 5th team this season. I don't know what they are expecting.

I think it's just simply a guy who can play OF. They are pretty slim on them.

I know D.Young & Ruf go play RF, but they aren't good OFers.

Asche with his first of (hopefully) many HRs today.

So three club options for utley. Worth up to 15 mil each if he reaches 500 PAs. Confusing contract structure but its basically a contract to take utley into retirement.

Rollins has cleared waivers. I for one wouldn't be too upset if he gets shipped out.

So I don't watch the Philliea enough (well not as much as my gf that is). What are the chances that Ruf becomes a full time player. If I'm mistaken he sucks in the outfieild but hits well. Next season does he have a chance to be a full time player?

He's been quite effective at the plate so far this year (.294/.400/.518) and if he keeps it up it'll be tough to keep him out of the lineup. He's blocked at 1B by Howard, so they'll have to put him in a corner OF spot, which he is not all too good at. Maybe during the off-season they ask him to play more winter ball and focus on playing LF. It would make sense for him to play LF rather than RF as Domonic Brown is the better athlete and has a pretty good arm, but making sense isn't what the Phillies are about all that much these days.

So far everybody (scouts/analysts) have said, Ruf will be a bench player at best, he is not an every day guy.

Well small sample sized:

Career so far:

.311/.394/.598/.992

8 HRs, 19 RBI's, 9 Doubles.

Only 38 games, but he's creeping up on a 1/4 of a season so far in his career.

Book still out, but I'm not so sure he's destined to be a bench player.

The #1 thing I like about him is he slugs, he's gonna hit doubles & hrs

The thing with Ruf is he's 27 years old. He's not a prospect. The thing I think the Phils are holding out hope for is that he becomes Jayson Werth, which doesn't really happen all that often. There's a lot more John Mayberry Jr's than there are Jayson Werth's.

That said his numbers in the major's are better than most of his numbers in the minors, and comparable to his one big year down there. The question is whether he turned the corner at 25-26 and this is what he is now, or if its the fact that he was 25 in A ball and 26 in AA that made him appear better than he was.

We'll have to wait and see what happens as he gets more AB's.

The big thing about Ruf is his strikeout rate. Right now that's about 30%. However, he has been taking a good amount of walks as well. The key for him is to get that K rate down. Also, when pitchers figure out how to pitch to him, he'll need to readjust and make sure to take those pitches and work the count.

If he can't take over an outfield position, I think he would be great at the very least to platoon with Howard. I know it sounds horrible that we have to platoon our $25 mil 1st baseman, but Howard cannot hit lefties. So far so good with Ruf though. I think based on what we've seen, he could become a good player.

They put nearly everyone on waivers around this time for whatever reason. The odds of him getting traded are pretty bad.
