Free agent or not, that's more valuable to a playoff team than a failed 1st round darft pick.
Apparently Phili didn't think he was a bust at the time.

Apparently they didn't think enough of him to keep him very long. They traded him to Minny on Dec. 17 for a 5th round pick. Sounds like a better deal for the Habs all the time.

only reason why he is so cheep is because of his contract is up at the end of the season

I nominate you to be the next Devil's GM!

right...but still doesn't have anything to do with comparing his trade to a possible Perrault trade.

$$$. Even if he was a bust, he was much cheaper than Perreault, and therefore less of a financial risk for the Flyers. Hence the higher return.

Cheaper, sure, but Perreault is hardly a financial risk. He's in the last year of a 2.7 or million dollar contract, with about half of that remaining. That's 1 million and change for a guy who wins two thirds of his faceoffs and always manages to score between 20-25 goals a year.

If I'm a GM of a playoff team looking to add depth or specialty players, a guy like Perreault is worth at least as much as a failed prospect like Chouinard, especially with only a million or so in salary commitment.

But then again, Clarke is a little unpredictable, and to use his trades (Oates, Chouinard, eg) as a benchmark probably doesn't settle anything.

In this NHL, a mil and change is a big deal. Still if only takes one desperate GM at the deadline to overpay (which a 1st would be). I just wouldn't bank on that GM being Lou Lamoriello.
