I think the thing with Kreider is he plays big in big games. He played hard in the playoffs, but when the game isn't big (regular season) his decisiveness isn't there. He needs to work on that and be more consistent.

I'm no Kreider fanboy but the kid has lots of talent, and he cares. In a chat with Jim Cerny I was very confident that Kreider would break out this year and said "he was disgusted with how he played this season, and already eager to get back and prove he belongs in the lineup". Something along those lines. If he gets in stride this year we can be a much better team....

Only exceptional players should skip the bridge contract. Derek Stepan has been exceptional for half a season. His other two seasons his production while developing was that of a 2nd/3rd line center his rookie season and a second line center his sophmore season.

Hopefully they can come to terms on a 2 or 3 year bridge deal comparable to Claude Giroux's.
There are so many teams which give big contracts out of entry level. I was looking at the Cap Geek on Friday trying to find 2nd contracts for 2 years for guys like Stepan. Not that many. The Flyers. Philly recently gave Couturier a 2 year bridge contract but he still has one year left. Those guys like the long term 2nd contract. They gave JVR $4.25M in a long term deal and then traded him. Maybe the Flyers are changing their way but didn't wait until the ELC expired.

Boston. Carolina. Edmonton.

Boston gave Marchand 2 years in 2011 after the ELC expires and his great performance in the 2011 playoffs. Before the lockout,Boston gave Marchand a 4 year contract. Marchand didn't get a big deal for a 2nd contract like Krejci,Lucic and Seguin.

Fedor Tyutin was the first player in the new NHL. He was a group II without arb rights in 2006. Needed 4 years. Tyutin signed a two year contract. In 2008,he signed a 4 year contract including 2 group III years.

Dan Girardi signed his ELC in 2006 as a 22 year old. Arb eligible at the end of the ELC. Signed a 2 year contract in 2008. Signed his current 4 year deal in 2010. Three group III years.

Ryan Callahan was arb eligible at the end of his 3 year ELC. Signed at 21. He signed a 2 year deal. Then he signed his current 3 year deal in 2011. 2 group III years.

Brandon Dubinsky was a group II without arb rights in 2009. Signed a 2 year deal. Then signed a 4 year deal. 2 group III years.

Michael Del Zotto was a group II without arb rights in 2012. Signed a 2 year contract. Group II with arb rights in 2014.

Carl Hagelin signed his 2 year ELC at 23. Arb eligible this summer. Signed a 2 year deal. He will be a group II again in 2015.

Henrik Lundqvist signed his ELC at 23. Arb eligible. Rangers took him to arbitration to take him off the market. The Vanek offer sheet scared them. $4.25M for one year. Then $6.875M for 6 years.

Marc Staal was a group II without arb rights in 2010. Signed a 5 year deal.

Ryan McDonagh was a group II with arb rights in 2013. Signed a 6 year deal.

18-20 need 4 years. 21 needs 3 years. 22-23 needs 2 years. 24 needs 1.

The Rangers like the 2 year deals.

I met our Captain today. What a great guy. He said the shoulder is feeling a lot better.

Also, mentioned it was "Going to be a great season"

I expect good things now! (certainly a departure from my norm)

Milbury was reportedly strutting his stuff on the draft floor like he was hot **** after that Luongo trade. He thought he pulled off a coup.

Yep. Anisimov had the most painless contract negotiation. He signed on July 8 as a group II with no arb rights.

Whats the odds of Holmgren giving Pietrangelo an offer sheet? Being over the cap hasn't stopped him before. Thinking about it, no circumstance has stopping him before...

I'd say extremely low. Not counting Pronger, they have 6 dmen making 3.5 mil per or more. Timmonen and Meszaros only have 1 year left, but I don't see any way they can fit Pietro this season. No one is going to do them any favors by trading for one of those guys. Few teams have the cap room.

Next year, they'll clear some cap space, but Giroux's new contract will kick in, both B.Schenn and Read will be up for new contracts, and they won't have any goalies signed.

Them signing Streit took them out of any serious possibility of giving out an offer sheet. Unless they can unload Coburn, I don't see it happening. And even then, St. Louis can pretty easily match.

Id say so too (they are what, 2m over the cap already?). I was only joking.

He really wanted to,and did whine in the papers about SEL not allowing him to do that. SEL or SHL was the only league who didn't allowed NHL players for part time contracts.
It was "sign for the hole year, or not sign at all"

Does anyone know who Stepan's agent is and who else the agent represents? Maybe this could give us a clue on how negotations might play out.

O2K is Stepan's agency

Eustace King is the main agent

http://www.o2kmanagement.com/team

TJ Oshie. Tyler Ennis. Wayne Simmonds. Chris Stewart. Those players signed short term contracts coming out of entry level. Oshie signed a 1 year deal. The others signed 2 year deals. Under $3M. Scott Hartnell. Jason Garrison.

http://www.o2kmanagement.com/clients

Logan Couture got 2 years/$5.75M in 2012. James Neal got 2 years/$5.75M in 2010. Same deal as Stewart in 2010. The value didn't change from the 2010 to 2012. The cap was $59.4M in 2010. $70.2M in 2012. $64.3M in 2013.

That should be Stepan's high side. 2 years/$5.75M. $2.875M.

Matt Duchene got 2 years/$7M as his 2nd contract but he was the 3rd pick overall in 2009. John Tavares got 6 years and $33M for a 2nd contract. Duchene signed a 5 year extension worth $30M which begins 14-15. Those guys had high cap hits with their performance bonuses starting in entry level.

Captain Ryan Callahan, who attended Thursday’s press conference along with defenseman Dan Girardi, has had difficult past negotiations with the Rangers, as well, and did not seem worried about Stepan’s dragging too far along.

“It’s part of the process,” Callahan said. “It’s how it always goes. The same thing happened with me and (former Ranger Brandon) Dubinsky, and a lot of players. He’s got to go through the process like everybody else did. And before long, I’m sure he’ll be signed.”
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/ran...han-talks-reha

Callahan hasn't had difficult negotiations. Dubinsky did. Twice. Callahan filed for arbitration twice. He settled early the first time. Settled the day before the hearing in 2011. His agent Stephen Bartlett is a pain in the ass. Its part of the process. Girardi and the Rangers have gotten two contracts done without much rancor.
