I would just let NYR trade their equivalent for Malkin

Not really. It was Dubinsky, Anisimov, some first round D prospect (Erixon?), a 1st round pick and that was about it.

The trade above for Malkin:

Price, Eller, Beaulieu, 1st round pick = 4 1st rounders
De La Rose = high second rounder
Gallagher = rare 5th rounder that just may turn out to be a 20+ goal scorer

Its essentially six 1st rounders.

You're right though, he's not going anywhere.

And even if he was, it's probably not worth the package that it would take to acquire him.

I am a Habs fan by the way. Malkin is not going anywhere except for an overpayment. Pittsburgh fan will probably want something like Subban + Galchenyuk for Malkin.

Right now, the Habs should keep their assets and in 3 to 4 years when Collberg, Lehkonen, Hudon, McCarron, de la Rose will be ready Bergevin will have alot of asset to make a big trade for an all-star player.

That may well be true.

In 9 years.

A reminder that Malkin's new contract doesn't kick in until next season, so he's still under contract with Pittsburgh for 9 more years. He'll turn 36 the off-season the following contract would begin. A trade is a possibility, but any deal to get Malkin in the near future would gut any team acquiring him so much that they'd probably be worse off for doing so. I'm sure you all are aware of this, but I wouldn't deny cracking a smile if, say, Steven Stamkos said he'd consider playing for Pittsburgh down the road, even if it was nearly a decade away from being feasible.

One thing about the tweets that confused me, though...Dallas offered him more? Wouldn't that be tampering considering he still had more than a year left on his contract? I'm legitimately not sure about the language on that and I know the Penguins could talk to him about the extension before he reached RFA status (remember the contract was agreed upon on June 13, but couldn't be made official until July 5), but I didn't think any other team could talk to him for another year still.

He's the second best player in the entire league. He produces as much as three DD. Two Plekanecs.

If he wants to score, he'll score.

It has made me very cynical as well. Who needs Malkin when we have Desharnais and the playoff monster Briere

Probably Price or Subban + Galchenyuk. Depends who they need the most. (I wouldn't do it)

Malkin would make the canadiens a very dangerous team to play against that is for sure if they were able to get him without giving up any major assets. That is not going to happen though. The assets that the habs would have to give up for him is not worth it imo. As somebody has already said in this thread, giving up the assets to acquire malken would probably cripple the habs to the point where it would not really even matter that malken plays for the habs.

I do wonder what assets the habs would have to give up to acquire malkin though.

He'll make a sick line with future Habs Crosby and Jagr.

I wouldn't give up Galchenyuk, I would pass on any trade that included him.

The other players like Price, Patches, Eller or PK I'd be willing to trade any 2 of them + some more for Malkin. The Rangers don't really have anything to offer but young D (which Pittsburgh doesn't need) and a bunch of older veterans, we'd win the bidding war easily.
