Oh man... I'm going to dream a lot about this. But my bet is that he would be gone to NYR.
What would we have to give for a player like him... That sounds scary, yet exciting. I bet they would ask for PK. He's our only untouchable in my books. But for a player like Malkin... I would think Pit would want a small to medium contract(s) with a boat load of prospects.
I wouldn't do it since they'd want so much.
We'd have Malkin (amazing when HOT), but we'd be missing so many players after acquiring him and Malkin is becoming a bit injury prone, no? (a bit worrisome?).
Of course I'd do it if we could give DD instead of one of Eller/Galchenyuk!! (but that's not going to happen!).
We already have our superstar (PK Subban) and we have to pay him...stop paying others before him (Markov and his $5.75mil/year...ZERO playoff results ; DD was already paid too much, etc). Price has superstar potential (already has his $$$$) when he gets HOT during playoffs (very possible...the way he did it with the Bulldogs when he was the playoffs MVP and for Canada at the WJC... I'm still waiting for him to do it with our Habs).
Pens would want our 1st Rnd Pick, 2nd Rnd Pick, maybe a 3rd Rnd Pick, one of Eller/Pleks/Galchenyuk, one of Tinordi//Beaulieu, maybe even Fucale (maybe) to replace M-A Fleury, and more.
we need a SOLID top 4 dman (PK Subban needs major help back there...he can't do everything by himself during playoffs...PK is the only playoff warrior we have...Tinordi can be one too, maybe Gorges can make a comeback and be a playoff warrior,etc... but we still need to add a top 4 warrior dman who can log 21min+ and be a winner during playoffs...we have too many regular season dmen...Markov, Diaz, etc).
I think at this point, with the players and prospects have coming up that are part of the Habs, I'd keep them over trading away half of them (probably incl. a guy like Galchenyuk) for one player that will command a huge chunk of cap space, and will set the rest of the team back in multiple positions for another 5 years.
rockjngo makes a good point, although price of trading for Malkin would be very high, his cap hit will lighten up the trade value by a bit (just by a bit). How many consistent 50-goal scorers were there since Gretzky? hes likely going to drop in production and will not be worth $9.5mil in just few years... yet his contract is set for another 9 years.
Since we have too many centres and a bit of excess D-man (including what we have in the prospect pool) we can afford to give up some of them especially when Pitt needs quality d-men. Here's a fair deal:
Galchenyuk + Subban + Beaulieu
Malkin would still triumph in terms of cap hit but thats a pretty fair deal you gotta say. You could throw in some first and second rounders on either sides but this is pretty solid in terms of needs of both sides. because then our centers would be: Malkin
Plek (Eller on his wing)
I still wouldn't do it tho prob. Just because I want Subban to be a lifer in MTL. We just need to get rid of DD and Eller in the next couple years so that our 4 centers can be: Galchenyuk, Plekanec, De LaRose, White. We can't keep Eller because Galch and Plek will most likely be our top 6 center and he's aiming to be a top 6 (like the J. Staal fiasco)
Honestly, long term, it's not worth what we'd have to give up to acquire Malkin. I look at the deal Ottawa made to acquire Bobby Ryan and I see that in the teams future when some of the prospects grow and develop. Obviously not a superstar like Malkin, but an all-star player on the level of Bobby Ryan.
Acquiring Evgeni Malkin, while it would be sweet, would surely lead to losing a huge chunk of the current lineup and lineup of the future as well as a lot of draft picks. We'd be setting ourselves back years.
