Top 20 Prospects: 3-Year Review

Now that we have ranked our top-30 prospects for 2013, I've decided to chart them up next to all the other prospects that made the list in the previous two years. It's an easy way to compare the progression of players over the years. The chart is organized so that all players who were ranked #1 at some point are listed first, followed by all players who held the #2 ranking at some point, etc.

Players who have graduated are highlighted in blue, while those who failed to graduate before leaving the organization are greyed out.

If a player jumped more than three positions from the previous year, their ranking for that year is highlighted in blue to mark a year in which they took a leap forward. Players who fell more than three rankings, be it from not meeting expectations or failing to keep up to an improving pool, are highlighted in red.

 201120122013
Sven Baertschi111
Sean Monahan--2
TJ Brodie22Grad
Johnny Gaudreau1743
Leland Irving43-
Greg Nemisz3824
Mark Jankowski-64
Jon Gillies-NR5
Max Reinhart658
Ryan Howse519NR
Corban Knight--6
Tyler Wotherspoon18177
Roman Horak117Grad
Paul Byron715NR
Mitch Wahl8NR-
Emile Poirier--9
Markus Granlund12912
Joni Ortio92020
Morgan Klimchuk--10
Laurent BrossoitNR1015
John Negrin10NR-
Patrick Sieloff-1211
Michael Ferland201123
Ken Agostino--13
Bill ArnoldNR1314
Pat Holland13--
John Ramage141422
Chris Breen15NR18
Mark Cundari--16
Akim Aliu-16-
Lance Bouma161819
Ben Hanowski--17
Joey Leach19--
Keegan Kanzig--21
Eric Roy--25
Ryan Culkin--26
Brett Kulak--27
Tim Harrison--28
Matt DeBlouw--29
Chad Billins--30

Some interesting things to note:
  • We have only graduated two prospects from the past three annual lists.
  • Six prospects have left the organization, but only three of those were ever considered top-10 on the list.
  • There are 18 players in the organization who were considered top-10 at some point. Two of them (Brodie, Horak) have graduated. Three of them (Baertschi, Monahan, Gaudreau) are highly likely to graduate, but Sven might be the only to join Brodie and Horak on the graduated list next year. Neimsz, Hoswe, and Byron are almost certainly busts by this time next year.
  • Biggest leap: Jon Gillies, who went from not ranked in 2012 to #5 in 2013.
  • Biggest fall: Greg Nemisz went from #8 last year to not ranked this year, following precisely in the footsteps of Mitch Wahl from the year before.

Based on patterns on this list, any predictions for future years? Personally I think this list will be filled with blue highlighted names by 2015 and 2016.

Awesome job.

As far as predictions I can see Gillies and Brossoit both in next years top 10. I think next years big faller will be Granlund.

Agree on Gillies, I kinda feel like Brossoit will drop, not very high on him.

Wow. That's pretty bad ass.

Is Horak a graduate though?

By the standards used for the prospect poll, he is.
