Lundqvist to be best paid player?

This is my first post so please excuse me if I'm not doing this correctly.

I couldnt see this being posted anywhere so here goes:
According to Aftobladet Lundqvist is in talks with the Rangers about a new contract.
560 million SEK for 8 years. I dont have time to do the conversion.

It's about 8.6 million USD.

They are 100% basing that on Brooksie's exaggerated contract speculation (according to New York Post, it says), so no, it won't happen.

That's bonkers! If my maths correct and those numbers are correct, that would mean paying a goalie over 10 mill/year. In my opinion it will cripple the team!

With the salary cap paying anyone that much is just a way to set the team up to fail in the future. The NHL would probably also not allow any contract that is just a way to circumvent the salary cap like they did with Kovalchuk.

I very much enjoy watching people flip over a million dollars or 2.

Like our genius GM could legitimately use that to make the team better. Ha.

2M dollars in cap space could mean extra depth on D in the playoffs.

$2M is a stretch. Hes not getting $10M per year. But if the different is between 8 and 9M, so what? THATS the difference between Sather being able to get depth and not?

Im usually a stickler for these things, but we're talking about the best goalie in Rangers history, one of the best players in the league, and the only reason this team can even be mistaken for good.

I think Sather is more of a figurehead now. I'm pretty sure Gorton is talking all the contracts

Benoit Pouliot at 1.3 million? Id say that signing makes the team better.

Not totally ridiculous, but I don't know that we'll see that for 8 years. Do we really want to count on him being a top tier goalie at 40? I'd be happy giving him 9M x 5 years...but if he wants 8 years I'd like to think there's a deal to be had in the 7.5M range. On the other hand I'd imagine the cap will be 10M higher 5 or so years from now...so maybe it's not a total cap killer to be stuck with an average hank at the end of the deal.

That 2M in cap space could also be the difference between giving an over-aged veteran scrub a decent contract or a ridiculous contract that ultimately Sather needs to find a way to move.

I agree that Sather is a terrible GM, but I don't think that's a reason he should give Lundqvist more than necessary.

Pekka, Rask and Quick are all locked up long term. These are the guys that rival Lundqvist as the best goalies in the world today.

Lundqvist doesn't need to be paid 8+ million to be the highest paid goalie in the NHL. Nor should he.

7.875 per is more than fair.

that would keep him the highest paid goalie in the league for the next 5 years at least as I see no other goalie being remotely close in terms of skill and ability.

I just may.

It would be a dick move on his part to demand that.

No goalie in the league will be making more than 7.5 until 17-18

What need is there for Lundqvist to demand being an 8 per year guy?

That's a selfish *****-type person in my opinion.

He's an elite player? One of the best in the game? Nash makes 7.8, Hank is more important, shouldn't he be the highest paid on the team if he wants it?

Ha.

No goaltender is more important to his team's success than Lundqvist, so, I think it gives him every right to ask for $8M per. If you're going to let him walk over a $125K (or let him walk in general), you might as well tear the whole team down and start from scratch.

A lot of you guys are too young to remember and/or understand what a Ranger team with no goaltending looks like. It ain't pretty.

Elite goalies don't get paid like elite skaters. Every penny he would get over $7 million would make him the highest paid goalie by that much more.

Tough to quantify, but wouldnt you say that Lundqvist is consistently the most important goaltender corresponding to his team's success?

In other words, guys like Rask and Quick have a much better team in front of them on any given night. And the reason those teams are better ain't because they have a million extra dollars in cap space.

Well considering elite skaters are now starting to push 9M+, I'm not so sure elite goalies aren't worth 7.5M-8M.
