Keeping with the MMA theme, his program reminds me a lot of BJ Penn's training regime. That's because they have the same trainer, Marv Marinovich. Are you familiar with any of Marinovich's arguments?

Find it and post it. I have never seen him do anything like that. What I have seen him do plenty of, though, are most of the exercises that I listed, none of which Lehkonen was doing in the videos. For example, I know that GSP joined an Olympic weightlifting gym in Montreal. That means a few things: squats, pulls, presses, jerks, and snatches are all part of his routine, and evidently absent from Lehkonen's. Do you know what else GSP has which is absent from Lehkonen? Any sort of maximal strength base to speak of whatsoever.

And by the way, can you give me a definition for functional strength?

And you think he doesn't do squats? He's a professionnal athlete, he trains every day, he's not going to do the same thing every day, that was just a short glimpse of what he does.
This.

I think it's kinda dumb when people take short videos and use them as gospel assuming that's all a player is capable of...that was four minutes of video....that's barely a couple sets in real life.....

Did you see a single barbell, bumper, or plate in that video? Because I didn't. Nor did I see any barbells on SSL's website, in the "strength work section."

In fact, the founder, whose credentials I was unable to find, only talks about this silly contraption Lehkonen's using.

And in this video he does similar exercices to the Lekhonen ones. In a primetime episode there were more, but I'd have to find it...
Oh ****, there he is with Gavin MacMillan, lol. I really don't think you can support a guy's system, with the same guy's system.

Yeah, except that video wasn't him doing a couple sets, but was rather meant to be a representative cross section of the physical training he does as an advertisement for SSL Turku.

I am saying that the SSL program is bullcrap. Are you insinuating that Gavin MacMillan is responsible for the athlete GSP is today?

From personnal experience, the exercices Lekhonen is doing is more important than what you were suggesting, they bring more tangible results on the field/ice (functionnal strenght, not just weight, muscles with no explosivness). I mean, yeah you have to do squats and other core exercices, but if that's all you do, you're going to be slow as hell, but hey, let's just agree to disagree. The thing is, I'd rather trust a professionnal trainer who trains GSP than a message board commenter with no credentials.
You also edited your post, I'm not sure why.

I asked you to define functional strength once before, and you did not. Are you under the impression that the exercises that I listed, when programmed correctly will lead to "just weight, muscles with no explosivness"?

No, you'd rather appeal to authority (the authority you were meaning to establish in the first place, double fallacy) than present an argument. Like, for example, what on earth functional strength could possibly mean. As if someone who could squat double body weight, and run a 4.5 40 would think to themselves "****, I wish my strength were more functional. If only I could balance on a bosu ball and juggle kettlebells..."

I actually have no idea. Look, if you had a definition for it, you'd just list it. For example, maximal strength.

"the greatest force that is possible in a single maximum contraction"

Not that much in fact. Chinese weightlifters will routinely squat over twice their body weight, and they are explosive as all ****. Moreover, some of those exercises can only be correctly categorized as explosive, such as pulls, snatches, and cleans. Sure, if you're grinding out single deadlifts all day, then that would qualify for what Verkhoshansky meant when he said that "excessive maximal strength training" can reduce explosive strength, but I don't think that anything I said could lead you to think that I was advocating an exclusively 1RM program.

As is evidenced by his burly 160lb physique.

I'm asking you to define it because I know it to be a meaningless term with no concrete definition, with any sort of a unit attached to it.

You have yourself a good day, and keep it functional.

There is a thread in prospect board about this and there are the links to the study that this prediction is based on (Desjardins league equivalencies and 17 year old production translating to NHL peak production).

The funny thing was that Lehkonen was an impact player in FEL so I could calculate his peak predicted by this model.

The model says Lehkonen will be a 75 point player in his peak in the NHL (with a very low chance of being less than a 50 point player).

My post wasn't THAT bad was it? LOL. Here I thought this thread was going to take a lighter slant...and all hell breaks loose.

I'm certain with someone like Timmins on board that they will fix Lehkonen's training regiment.

Or learn from it when 160lbs Lehkonen gives a beating to 240lbs McCarron next time they play one-another.
