Buffalo - Pittsburgh

To Pittsburgh: Cody McCormick with twenty-five percent of his cap hit retained.
To Buffalo: A 2014 fourth-round draft pick.

Deal?

They will not waste a cap retention on him. they have Miller, Stafford, and Vanek to use such a cap retention on.

Besides---you can claim him for free when he has to clear waivers after training camp.

Sure, but his cap hit is a little bit high. It would help if his cap hit was retained.

You can likely claim him on waivers if you really want him. He's been a good solider but his only purpose I see left is either leadership/toughness in Rochester or calling him up and subjecting him to waivers when we play boston lol

I dont see why the Penguins would do this, why he is needed or where he would play. Nor do I see why Buffalo would be willing to use salary retention on McCormick.

Before his major concussion, Cody was a solid 4th liner and a somewhat fan favorite. That one season he put up 20 points, hit everything that moved, fought regularly and even chipped in 8 goals. Was expecting more but that concussion ruined him.

Sounds like concussions have put him at Tanner Glass level so we'll pass. A pity he seemed like a good 4th liner.

Yeah. He's pretty damaged goods now. Was pretty solid.

Ironically, it was a bout with Tanner Glass that brought on his concussion.

Um, no. Why the hell do the Penguins need him? You understand that Vitale is more than capable as a 4th line C and that the Pens still have Adams and if the Pens move Glass for cap space, then we might get Jeffrey on that 4th line and maybe Megna as the 13th forward...some fresh blood. Finally.

Surprising given how bad Glass is at fighting.

Buffalo isn't going to waste the ability to retain cap on a 4th liner/AHLer when we're looking at moving Vanek and Miller.

Oh, Glass lost the fight -- he was split open and bleeding all over if I recall correctly. It was just after that and then getting hit the next night in Montreal, Cody was then out with the concussion and stopped being as rambuncious.

Buffalo would be brain dead to turn down this deal.
McCormick is going to cost then $1million for the season if they keep him.

so what if he'll cost us a million? it's not like we're any where near the cap nor do we have any big contracts coming up. I guess an argument could be made for Hodgson but he's likely to get a bridge contract, although I'd much rather lock him up long-term. This deal makes no sense for us. Why would Buffalo retain salary to trade a 4th liner with concussion issues when they are attempting to move both Miller and Vanek. Makes no sense.

Im assuming hes referring to the basically free 4th rounder the OP offered...though I am in the boat of keeping Cody for leadership in rochester and the potential need for an enforcer in buffalo just in case...this may be an ignorant attitude but whatever...

Why?? Buffalo would waste one of their 2 cap retentions on this when they could use it on Vanek or Miller and actually get better or more assets back.

In terms of the hit against their cap---As of now McCormick cap hit against their cap would be less than them retaining salary against the cap.

If they wanted to do a straight buy out of him ir would be $333,333 per year the next 2 years.

saving <$500,000 isnt the worth the value of burning a cap retention. this is bad team management.
